Offer Description

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Core Facilities is a university-wide Life Science research infrastructure located at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. Here you have access to some of Sweden's most advanced techniques and analysis tools for research in eg. medicine, biomedicine and clinical studies. All our units have strong national and international profiles and are part of national research infrastructures such as SciLIfeLab. The units at Core Facilities are equipped with advanced instrumentation and highly competent and specialized staff. Next to highly qualified research support, our experts also offer theoretical education and practical courses. Our infrastructure is open to all researchers from Swedish and international institutions as well as private industry.

The Centre for Cellular Imaging (CCI), in operation since 2003, is a national research infrastructure and one of the leading academic imaging facilities in Sweden providing expertise and access to advanced microscopy to the research community both locally and at other Swedish universities and abroad, including industry (https://www.gu.se/en/core-facilities/centre-for-cellular-imaging ). The CCI is one of the advanced technology platforms at the Core Facilities of the University of Gothenburg, and is also part of the National Microscopy Infrastructure (https://nmisweden.se/ ), the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, https://www.scilifelab.se ) and the Euro-BioImaging-ERIC (https://www.eurobioimaging.eu/ ). The CCI offers a variety of services and training in high-end microscopy and image analysis for researchers in the various fields of life science, but also chemistry, physics, and material science. The equipment includes several laser scanning (confocal and multiphoton) and conventional light microscopes, super-resolution microscopes, lightsheet microscopy, MALDI imaging mass spectrometry as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopes. We have also a comprehensive suite of sample preparation labs. The scientific staff at the CCI assists researchers in the experimental designing and planning of imaging experiments and provides the in-depth training for the operation of the microscopes and for specific imaging techniques. Additionally, support is provided in the processing, rendering and analysis of the acquired datasets and computational infrastructure for handling big image data. The CCI team has broad interactions with the wider microscopy community and has wide-ranging collaborations with both academic and industrial partners.

The CCI is now looking for a Research Infrastructure Expert (Associate Researcher) in smart microscopy. Over the last decade much effort has been made to connect bioimage analysis with fully motorised and computer-controlled microscopes to generate automated and adaptive imaging workflows, referred to as smart microscopy. The purpose of this position is to create and implement smart microscopy workflows at the core facility level to service our scientific community. All developments must be associated to the needs of our users and their scientific questions.

Duties

We are looking for a Research Infrastructure Expert with strong background in software development and interested in creating, implementing, and fine tuning feedback microscopy software tools at the Centre for Cellular Imaging. This job position focuses on the automation of, for example, targeted microscopy, functional microscopy, and tracking of cells over time using widefield, laser scanning and lightsheet microscopes. At this post you will also explore the implementation of smart microscopy in the field of electron microscopy - Transmission and Scanning. Image analysis pipelines will include machine learning and deep learning (Artificial Intelligence). The post holder will implement on-the-fly data processing and real time feedback into imaging workflows, which is particularly important for live imaging. Another important task will be the management of large data, here the post holder will explore the automated pre-processing of images before transfer to storage servers.

The candidate will work in CCIs advanced microscopy facility and:
- Develop software tools for smart microscopy to service our scientific community.
- Educate and train users in the implementation of smart microscopy workflows
- Support our users by assisting and training them in bioimage analysis.
- Advise on the design of smart microscopy experiments.
- Continuing professional development in the field of smart microscopy by attending courses and workshops, presenting work at scientific meetings, and keeping abreast of relevant literature.
- Participate in the organization and teaching of workshops for our broad scientific community and of practices/lectures for graduate and undergraduate courses.

Qualifications

We are looking for a service-minded team player with a strong background in software development, that enjoys solving (bio)image analysis challenges with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. The suitable candidate:

Must have:

  • A university degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, or engineering. Having a PhD in these fields is not mandatory but meritorious.
  • Proven experience in software development.
  • Experience using version control systems such as GitHub.
  • Programming experience in Python.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills. Fluency in English is required due to daily interactions with the CCI’s international user base.

Should have:

  • Proven work experience in image analysis.
  • Knowledge of image analysis software tools, with particular emphasis on open-source software such as: ImageJ Macro, Python, Fiji, Napari, scikit-image.

It is meritorious to have:

  • Background or Experience in hardware control, particularly microscopy related, for example using: LabView, Micro-Manager, Pycro-Manager, Python-microscopy, and ImSwitch, etc.
  • Experience in scripting bioimage analysis workflows.
  • Proven work experience in data analysis, feature extraction, statistics, and machine learning.
  • Experience in teaching and developing training material.
  • Experience with Java, or C++.
  • Advanced programming experience in Python.

The candidate should be willing to expand his/her knowledge in new microscopy and bioimage analysis methods and be ready to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment. In a core facility, the ability to manage multiple user projects and structure the work within short timelines is essential. The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as boing part of a team. We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a problem-solving mentality who combines technical expertise with strong communication skills and who has a strong will to aid other researcher in their work.

Employment

The employment is a full-time (100%), permanent position, placed at the Centre for Cellular Imaging (CCI) within the Core Facilities at the University of Gothenburg. A probationary employment period of 6 months may be applied. Start date as soon as possible based on agreement.

Employment title: Associate Researcher
