Work assignments 

The purpose of the position as an assistant professor is that the teacher should be given the opportunity to develop his independence as a researcher and to merit both scientifically and pedagogically in order to meet the requirements for eligibility for a position as a associate professor.

As an assistant professor within the WCMM program, you will teach at undergraduate and graduate level in Swedish and/or English. The teaching includes supervision of students at Linköping University's different programs, course design and course coordination. At Linköping University, student-active teaching methods are applied.

The position is within the subject of molecular medicine, a broad field that studies molecular mechanisms and structures with relevance to diseases or their treatment. Research that uses advanced technology to influence or investigate physiological or pathophysiological processes is also included.

Your tasks will include conducting independent research in the subject area at an internationally competitive level. The position will involve interactions with other Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) fellows and Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) fellows locally and nationally.

You are active in the research community, participate in the department's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results via academic publications and contribute to attracting external research funding.

You actively contribute to the university's development work. The employment may also involve having administrative assignments. We would also like to see you participate in and show interest in management assignments.

Your work includes following developments in your subject area nationally and internationally as well as to follow societal developments in general that are important to your work.

Qualifications

For being eligible you need to hold a PhD or have equivalent scientific competence. We are primarily looking for candidates that have completed the PhD within the last five years.

For this employment, scientific skills are of outmost importance.

Regarding teaching skills, the following will be assessed:

  • Requirements for employment

    • experience in research in molecular medicine, or research field with obvious relevance to the subject area

  • Particularly meritorious

    • experience of conducting research outside Sweden.

    • if the proposed research fits well into the strong research environments and educational subjects available at Linköping University

    • ability to obtain external grants

The position requires good cooperation skills.

After six years, the holder of the position is expected to have sufficient merit in both teaching and research to be promoted to associate professor.


About the WCMM fellow program

WCMM is a national initiative funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. WCMM-LiU was started in 2015 and currently includes 16 research groups. WCMM-LiU specializes in the interaction between medicine and technology, and the participating research groups are located at the medical faculty or at the technical faculty.

As a WCMM fellow, you get an excellent opportunity to establish a research group. Each WCMM fellow receives a recruitment package, tentatively set at SEK 17 million, intended to cover 6 years of own salary and other resources, such as doctoral students, postdoctoral positions and running costs. Furthermore, the service provides access to a network of other WCMM, DDLS and SciLifeLab fellows locally and nationally.

Your future workplace is determined based on your research profile with placement at one of the departments at the Faculty of Medicine or Technology.


The employment

For this employment, an employment period of 6 years applies. The start date is set by agreement.

An assistant professor may be employed until further notice, for a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years, as determined by the institution of higher education before the employment begins. The employment may be renewed, by a maximum period of two years, if, as a consequence of sick absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the assistant professor, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.

An assistant professor shall, after application, be promoted to associate professor if he/she is qualified for employment as associate professor and has been assessed following a test to be suitable for such employment according to the grounds for assessment that the University has determined. 

As an additional basis for the assessment, the following criteria will be taken into account:

- Demonstration of independent research that resulted in high-quality publications with senior authorship.

- During employment, demonstrated ability to competitively obtain external research funding from excellent funding bodys.

- Supervision of PhD students as main or co-supervisor.

- Sufficient knowledge of Swedish to be able to actively participate in teaching in Swedish.
