Assistant Professor in Experimental Neuroradiology

Our research group develops, validates and applies advanced imaging techniques within a fast-paced clinical environment. We work to gain pathophysiological insights and actionable quantitative imaging biomarkers with a special focus on neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. We have immediate access to the latest imaging technologies, including clinical 7 Tesla MRI and photon-counting CT. We are now seeking a talented Assistant Professor to join our dynamic team of radiologists, physicists and radiographers.


Your mission

The employment as Assistant Professor involves working independently, and in collaboration with others, on advancing clinical imaging techniques for disease diagnosis and treatment planning for neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. The candidate will implement and validate new MRI sequences both in vivo and ex vivo in close collaboration with experts in neuroradiology, MRI physics and neuropathology. Examples of tasks are: 

  • Planning and leading research projects
  • Produce scientific publications and research communication
  • Acquiring, processing and analyzing MRI and CT data with a focus on quantitively imaging biomarkers
  • Teaching activities such as lectures/seminars for basic, advanced and doctoral student education
  • Supervising master and PhD students and research assistants/engineers
  • Applying for external research funding
  • Initiate and participate in collaborations with research groups and authorities.
  • Contribute with competence to the work environment within the research group, unit and department

This role will be based in Huddinge but you will also work in Solna if necessary.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 5 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.


Eligibility requirements

The sucessfull candidate must have the following qualities:

  • PhD in neuroimaging with a focus on neurodegeneration and/or neuroinflammation
  • MRI driver’s license with 7 Tesla and high-performance gradient experience in vivo and ex vivo
  • Experience in advanced neuroimaging techniques and MRI sequence optimization
  • Experience in patient handling in an MRI setting
  • Experience in working with large neuroimaging datasets
  • Excellent language skills in English

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.


Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants. Experience of research in advanced neuroimaging with scientific publishing and supervision in the field is considered essential for success in the role.

The candidate should have the following qualities:

  • Knowledge of neuroimaging applications in multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, movement disorders, dementia and covid-19
  • Strong skills in the imaging postprocessing software such as FreeSurfer, FSL and SPM
  • Scientific top-tier publications in the field of neuroimaging, in particular on neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders
  • Experience in teaching at university level, including supervising PhD students in neuroimaging
  • Experience in leading a neuroimaging research team

The following competences, skills and experiences are considered meritorious:

  • Obtaining external research grants
  • Good ability to collaborate with different professions and make new contacts

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
