Offer Description

BIOMEDICAL INFORMATICS DATA SCIENTIST - OMOP DATA ANALYST

**OFFER DESCRIPTION:

The HARMONY Alliance Foundation (https://www.harmony-alliance.eu ) has been built from two umbrella initiatives: HARMONY and HARMONY PLUS, aiming to share, collect, harmonize, and analyze heterogeneous big data in hematology from real-world data sets and clinical trials.

A HARMONY Big Data Platform has been developed as a centralised database collecting anonymized and OMOP-harmonized large amounts of data on hematologic malignancies (ALL, AML, CLL, MM, MDS, NHL, HL, MPN, CML, PV, ET, MF, WM, and other rare blood cancers)1 which can then be used to improve outcomes in Haematology and address the needs of patients, healthcare providers, the pharmaceutical industry, payers, and key stakeholders worldwide.

The OMOP (Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership) CDM (Common Data Model) harmonization is fundamental for the development of the HARMONY Big Data Platform to address the heterogeneity of incoming data from different sources. It consists of transforming the information from the origin databases into a common representation in terms of structure, vocabularies, terminologies, or coding schemes allowing for collaborative research, the development of more standardized and efficient analyses and sophisticated analytic tools that leverage high-impact reliable results.

Therefore, the selected candidate(s) will join the HARMONY Alliance “Data Science Hub - Data Access, Analytics and Integrated Service Platform”, under the coordination and supervision of HARMONY Alliance Coordination Team in Salamanca.

They will participate in data review, validation and preparation for analysis, data analysis itself, and development of indicators and statistics of the already OMOP-harmonized real-world and clinical trials data, as well as other tasks to streamline data analytics by applying classic, and advanced statistical and Big Data (i.e., patterns recognition, building predictions using algorithms, machine learning and AI techniques) techniques within the different research projects approved in one or more of the disease pillars of the HARMONY Alliance. In addition, they will also provide guidance on the OMOP-harmonized data understanding, preparation, and analytics to clinicians and other data analysts on the team, as well as participate in meetings with clinicians and healthcare managers worldwide.

1 ALL: acute lymphoblastic leukemia; AML: acute myeloid leukemia; CLL:  chronic lymphocytic leukemia; MM: multiple myeloma; MDS: myelodysplastic syndromes; NHL: non-Hodgkin lymphoma; HL: Hodgkin lymphoma; MPN: myeloproliferative neoplasms; CML: chronic myeloid leukemia; PV: polycythemia vera; ET: essential thrombocythemia; MF: myelofibrosis; WM: Waldenström macroglobulinemia.

Scientific activities will be carried out at the Centro de Investigación del Cáncer / Cancer Research Center (CIC) that is located in the city of Salamanca (Spain).

The CIC is one of the international-leading research centers in Spain in terms of scientific output, carrying out innovative biomedical research related to cancer and other high-incidence diseases at the basic, translational, and clinical level (www.cicancer.org/en ). It houses 27 research laboratories, ten technical units, and ≈220 research and administration staff. The CIC is located in a rather active biomedical campus that encompasses a University Hospital with an associated Health Research Institute, two additional USAL-ran Research Institutes (Neurosciences and Functional Genomics), all the Biomedical schools (Medicine, Pharmacology, Biology, Biotechnology), and an adjacent Scientific/Industrial Campus where ten start-up companies have been established. The CIC trains, in close association with the USAL, master, graduate, and post-doctoral students in average per year. Given its close connection with patient-associated initiatives, the CIC has been recognized as a Health Centre by the Castilla-León Health System (SACYL; Reg. #5-14-0001). With this accreditation, the CIC can carry out Hospital-like tasks (diagnostic, Hospital-associated clinical trials). Many of the CIC research groups have stable collaborations with biopharmaceutical companies.

In addition to standard administration, human resources and maintenance units, the CIC has a number of specialized technical facilities for Diagnostic Molecular Pathology, Genomics & Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Flow Cytometry, Advanced Microscopy, Structural Biology and Scientific Communication. It also has an adjacent Animal Experimentation and Transgenic Facility. All these facilities are fully certified by Bureau Veritas Bureau Veritas (ISO9001 and ISO 45001), which allow them to carry out fully licensed technical services. Unlike the case of most facilities in academic centers, the CIC technical units have been developed with the goal of providing service to both indoor and outdoor scientists, academic and healthcare institutions, and the biopharmaceutical industry. In addition, these units have as one of their goals to help disseminating new technologies, either by organizing courses or by participating in nationwide technological platforms (i.e., the Spanish Institute of Proteomics-ProteoRed initiative).
