Job Type: FullTime

The laboratory of Kedar Aras, Ph.D in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo (https://www.kedararas.com) is recruiting a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher who will engage in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular engineering research.

The lab focuses on investigating the dynamic interplay between the fat and the heart in promoting cardiac arrhythmias. We take a unique approach to investigating acute and chronic effects of cardiac obesity on arrhythmogenesis by combining small and large animal model studies with donor human hearts, which provides an optimal balance between basic research and direct clinical impact.

Using spatiotemporal multi-pronged (integrated omics, functional and structural imaging) and multi-scale (molecule to whole heart and systems) approach, we seek to characterize the role of obesity and metabolic syndrome in promoting arrhythmias as well as develop and validate novel diagnostic tools and strategies for effective therapy of obesity mediated cardiac conduction and rhythm disorders.

Ideal candidates should have a Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering, Physiology, or related fields and be proficient in two or more of the following core skills including:

  • Cardiac electrophysiology: optical and/or electrical cardiac mapping and signal processing
  • Animal handling and surgery (rodents, rabbits, pigs) and donor human hearts
  • Molecular imaging (western blot, histology, immunohistochemistry) and cell/tissue culture
  • Bioinformatics (transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics).

Strong candidates are also expected to demonstrate excellent scientific communication, work ethic, flexibility and adaptability, problem solving skills, and time management and organizational skills.

Buffalo is well known for being a city of good neighbors with low cost of living, wonderful quality of life including diverse cultural scene as well as proximity to historical landmarks such as Niagara Falls.
