Job Description

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant (TA) in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support GIS-related activities in its GIS Unit and GIS educational programmes. The position is on the Educator Track that aims to attract, nurture, and retain suitably qualified and highly effective teaching staff who approach teaching as a scholarly practice, and who are passionate about excellence in teaching as a means of supporting student learning. The track provides opportunities for promotion to Instructor. 

 

The GIS Unit spearheads the research, training, and applications of GIS in the Department and aims to extend beyond the academic realm to foster an Asia-focused GIS ecosystem with global impacts and reach. The Department is the leading centre in Singapore for GIS research and teaching, hosting comprehensive geospatial and other laboratory facilities. It currently runs three GIS educational programmes, comprising the MSc in Applied GIS , Graduate Certificate in Applied GIS , and GIS Minor and developed upon a diverse range of courses (e.g., Introduction to GIS, Spatial Programming, Spatial Big Data and Analytics, Internet GIS and Spatial Data Science). Plans are underway to complement the three existing programmes with a Graduate Diploma in Applied GIS (thereby creating a fully-stackable MSc degree in Applied GIS) and a Professional Certificate in Applied GIS.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing educational resources and conducting tutorials and lectures for undergraduate, postgraduate, and Continuing and Professional Education courses.
  • Provide administrative support to various GIS-related programmes.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the GIS lab.
  • Manage GIS and remote sensing software licenses purchased by the department, and update the GIS Unit websites and social media accounts.
  • Any ad-hoc duties related to teaching and research of the GIS Unit.

Qualifications
  • A good bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is a requirement. In addition, a master's degree in a relevant discipline is desirable.
  • Strong interest and abilities in GIS and the relevant technologies.
  • Strong interest in pedagogy.
  • Excellent verbal, reading, and written skills.
  • Able to work independently and as a team player.
  • Strong ability to engage and facilitate discussions with undergraduate/postgraduate students.
  • Prior teaching/facilitation experience with good student feedback is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with content creation and promotion through social media is a plus.
