The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a research institute at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies. The Centre for Geohazard Observations (CGO) of EOS provides technical and research support to the observatory. It installs, maintain and manages the observatory’s geophysical and other field instrumentation stations spread over several countries in the region.

The Senior Research Engineer is to enable the research conducted by EOS by providing effective technical and technological solutions in installing, maintaining and managing the various geohazard observation stations, and conducting field surveys. The purpose is to measure and collect quality field data necessary for the tectonic, volcanic and climate related research of the observatory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, install and maintain geohazard observation stations and networks in and round Southeast Asia that collect geophysical, geodetic and geochemical data for research. The stations include but not limited to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) station, seismic station, volcano observation stations, infrasound network and environmental observation station.

  • Design, install and maintain technical systems, such as the power system, radio/telemetry system, data networking system, fault monitoring system for the geohazard observation stations.

  • Plan, organise, conduct local and overseas fieldwork for the installation, maintenance and rectification of the geohazard observation stations.

  • Plan, organise and conduct geophysical field measurements using modern surveying equipment.

  • Monitor the operational status of the geohazard observation stations remotely, devise fault rectification plan and rectify remotely where possible.

  • Coordinate with collaborators for the conduct of installation and maintenance fieldwork.

  • Perform data quality check and basic data processing.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields with 8 years of relevant working experience, or

  • Master’s degree in engineering or related fields with 6 years of relevant working experience.

  • Experience and knowledge in GNSS data processing using GAMIT/GLOBK or similar software.

  • Experience and knowledge in computing languages such Python and bash scripting.

  • Experience and knowledge in Data Networking/Telemetry.

  • Experience and knowledge in the electrical domain.

  • Experience in conducting fieldwork at remote locations.

  • Evidence of being a strong team player.

  • Evidence of technical or technological resourcefulness and inventiveness.

  • Experience in earth, climate or environmental science related fieldwork in Southeast Asia region is an advantage.
