The Geodesy Group of the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang technological University in Singapore invites applications for several positions at the level of Research Fellow. We are interested in applications from qualified candidates who have interests and expertise relevant to the interpretation, modelling, and innovation of geodetic data towards understanding tectonic deformation in South and Southeast Asia. The successful candidate will join a large new multidisciplinary project aimed at understanding the earthquakes and volcanoes of the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire, connections between them, how they can result in cascading hazards and compound disasters, and their societal implications.
Successful candidates will join a diverse and inclusive group of geodesists at EOS whose research covers GNSS, GNSS-IR, InSAR, tectonic geodesy, climate geodesy, sea-level rise, groundwater-related subsidence, and remote sensing. Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., geophysics, earth science), expertise in processing and/or modelling geodetic data using open-source analysis tools, and a demonstrated track record of strong research publications in topics related to the position. They will also have strong English and communication skills, the ability to write code using Python or MATLAB, the desire and ability to work as part of a multi-cultural team, and demonstrated ability of intellectual thought leadership. They will work closely with other research groups at EOS, collaborating with experts in structural geology, paleogeodesy, geophysics, seismology, risk, and the EOS Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS).
EOS is a Research Centre of Excellence that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies. EOS is an institute of Nanyang Technological University, which has been placed the world’s top young university for the past seven years in the QS rankings. The University's main campus is frequently listed among the Top 15 most beautiful university campuses in the world and it has 57 Green Mark-certified (equivalent to LEED-certified) building projects, of which 95% are certified Green Mark Platinum.
Job Responsibilities
Numerical modeling of geodetic, remote sensing and geological data to better understand tectonic processes at subduction zones around Southeast Asia
Innovation of modeling and observational techniques (e.g., by extension of our observation networks to the seafloor)
Collaboration with different research groups across EOS to synthesize interdisciplinary understanding of subduction zone tectonics.
Development of new research directions independently and in a team
Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students
Write up of research results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at conferences
Job Requirements
Ph.D. in Earth science, geophysics, geodesy, natural hazards, computational modelling, or a related field
Demonstrated expertise in numerical modeling of earthquake and/or volcano deformation is a requirement
Evidence of excellent communication skills and potential for mentoring students is required
Strong expertise in programming with Python or MATLAB is required
Strong track record of publishing research relevant to the position in Tier 1 journals is required
Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit is required
Experience collecting and processing seafloor geodesy observations would be a strong plus
Expertise in high-precision GNSS data processing using the GAMIT or GIPSY processing tools would a plus
Experience processing with additional types of data such (e.g., InSAR, GNSS-IR, satellite altimetry, GRACE) would be a plus
Some information about the work of our group can be found at https://twitter.com/eos_geodesy . Interested applicants should submit a CV, research statement, and the names and contact information for three referees.
