Research Fellow (Dept of Surgery)

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow for translational research involving a novel hemostatic device, that will have first-of-its-kind, drug-free, fast-clotting, and non-adherent characteristics. The position will be at the Department of Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/medsur/index.html ). Appointments will be made on a 12-months contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a passion for medical research to contribute to the translation of a novel hemostatic bandage material. This material is designed to achieve rapid clotting while preventing adherence to the wound post-clotting, thus effectively preventing secondary tears and bleeding during dressing removal. The candidate will primarily focus on conducting pre-clinical testing and materials optimization to support commercialization efforts. Additionally, the role involves finishing required preclinical animal studies, achieving design freeze, and overseeing fabrication of the device in an ISO 13485 facility. Working closely with regulatory consultants to determine the steps required for our regulatory pathway and conducting animal testing for different bleeding models are also key responsibilities of this role. The successful candidate will work with a multinational team with strong, diverse expertise (including materials, trauma medicine, and regulatory and business strategies) from a collaboration involving NUS and Imperial College London. This position thus offers a unique opportunity for involvement in various aspects of medical innovation and translation.

The main duties of the Research Fellow are as follows:

• Fabricate hemostatic device through nanomaterial spray coating.
• Develop animal models to test product efficacy on different wound types.
• Conduct animal testing (rats and swine) to assess device performance.
• Collaborate with contract manufacturer for production at ISO 13485 certified facility.
• Drive commercialization efforts in alignment with translational grant objectives.

The applicant should ideally have:

• PhD degree in relevant field such as Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline
• Expertise in nanomaterials, thrombosis biology, and assay techniques
• Hands-on experience in handling laboratory animals, conducting surgical procedures, or managing animal care.
• Specific experience in relevant surgical techniques, including creating wound models in rats.
• Strong research background with a track record of publications in related fields
