The Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS), invites applications for the full-time position of Research Associate to work on a major two-year research project funded by the National Heritage Board. The position is available on a full-time basis for 9-12 months.

 

Singapore citizens and permanent residents are eligible for Central Provident Fund benefits. 


Job Description

The successful candidate will need to possess relevant experience and interest in the economics history of Chinese businesses in colonial Singapore. The ideal candidate must have a good grasp of English and Chinese to be able to handle business and accounting documents in both languages. 

 

The candidate must also be a team player as he/she will be required to coordinate and communicate with our research team in the Religion and Globalisation Cluster and other relevant departments in NUS to produce deliverables, such as compiling and analysing data from business directories, producing reports on the progress of the research, and writing journal articles to present the research analyses and conclusions.


Job Requirements

The successful candidate should have at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., economics, business, Chinese history) and a track record of good writing aimed at academia and a wider audience.

 

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Interest and experience in the history of Chinese businessmen in Singapore and their networks.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Excellent Chinese skills as the candidate will be dealing with archival materials written in traditional Chinese.
  • Organisational skills for administrative tasks.
  • Report-writing skills.
  • Inter-personal skills for liaising with partners and collaborators and organising events.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively.

  • Contract commencing in May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter for an initial period of 9-12 months.
