Offer Description

Job Description

The Insect Diversity Lab is in search of a full-time Research Assistant. The successful candidate will work with Dr John S. Ascher on mobilizing data for insects under a project on Shaping Public Adaptive Capacity For Environmental Infectious Diseases.

We study global insect diversity with current focus on bees and related wasps of Southeast Asia. A key goal is to develop taxonomic infrastructure and to use this to advance research on insect urban ecology, behaviour, and conservation. For this project on Singapore, we will survey bees and other pollinators at a set of sites along an urban to greenspace gradient to understand how these are responding to Dengue control measures. In addition, we will assemble and validate specimen and observation records for both pollinators and vectors (mosquitos) for use in species distributions models (SDMs) in order to evaluate possible correlations at the national level.

The main responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Field sampling of bees/wasps using a sweep net, and potentially also collection/identification of larvae/adult mosquitoes.
  • Lab-based work such as:
    • Processing of collected specimens (pinning, labelling, curating)
    • Specimen databasing and validation of existing relational databases and spreadsheets
    • GIS and other mapping and downstream modelling using SDMs using MaxEnt
