Job Description
The Department of Japanese Studies, National University of Singapore, is a major center in the field of Japanese Studies, while NUS is consistently ranked as one of the world's best universities. The Department invites applications for the post of Lecturer (Educator Track).
The Educator Track aims to attract, nurture and retain suitably qualified and highly effective faculty members who are passionate about teaching, committed to pedagogical innovation, and have a demonstrated track record in teaching excellence. Applicants should have a relevant Ph.D. in history and area studies, with a focus on Japan.
Applicants need to be able to teach courses on early modern Japanese history at all levels, and academic translation; preference will be given to applicants who can also teach advanced level courses on media and Japanese culture. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate strong academic, teaching and administrative abilities, and willingness to promote a collaborative departmental culture. Fluency in English and Japanese is required. Successful candidates should have a proven track record in teaching modules in an area studies department, an interest in pedagogical research will be an advantage.
The appointment will begin in July 2024 for an initial period of three years. Contract renewal is subject to good performance in terms of meeting departmental teaching and other needs including collaborative work. The Educator Track scheme has clearly defined career progression to Senior Lecturer (term contract), Associate Professor (open contract) with a possibility of promotion to Full Professor (tenure track).
The Department of Japanese Studies was founded 40 years ago and currently has eleven faculty members specializing in fields including anthropology, politics, history, popular culture, literature, linguistics and geography. The Department belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) that combines disciplinary with area studies departments in Asian Studies and is supported by a comprehensive Japanese language programme in the university’s Centre for Language Studies.
