The Center Liaison Officer (CLO) manages Water Desalination and Reuse Center’s (WDRC’s) engagements with extramural entities, including companies, research institutes, foundations, and government agencies. The position is a combined research and administrative position within WDRC that requires the ability to attract external funding and work either independently or collaboratively, as required by a given project. The Officer also coordinates workflows between WDRC and administrative units within KAUST, including the Division of Innovation and Economic Development (IED) and the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR). The officer requires broad training and experience in water-related research. This position also requires experience working with academics and technology transfer professionals to facilitate bridging the gap between laboratory research and commercial applications. The position requires a PhD in a field relevant to WDRC’s mission, and a minimum of 5 years’ experience, including administrative experience, in an academic environment. This is a full-time and permanent position within WDRC.
  • Serve as a liaison between WDRC faculty and IED units, including Industry Engagement Office (IEO) and Technology Transfer Office (TTO)
  • Assist Center-aligned faculty in developing and maintaining collaborations with external organizations, in activities including: proposal development and negotiations; progress reporting; management of regular meetings and communication among collaboration stakeholders
  • Assist with tracking and follow up on contract negotiations and award status with relevant KAUST divisions and departments, such as IED and OSR
  • Collaborate with IED to identify and recruit new members to the KAUST Industry Collaboration Program (KICP) whose businesses align with the Water Research Thrust of KAUST
  • Work to attract companies to engage with WDRC
  • Assist the Center Director in maintaining the Center Industry Affiliates Program (CIAP)
  • Organize student internships and job placements for WDRC students
  • Coordinate with units in IED Division to survey and analyze the range of research topics pursued by Center faculty in order to identify translational potential, including the development of commercial applications of their research
  • Support the development and implementation of strategies to disseminate research results to attract new, internal and external funding for Center-aligned faculty
  • Assist WDRC Director in reporting on current and potential R&D activities to the Dean and to IED Division
  • Undertake project management activities against projected time lines, estimated budgets, and expected deliverables
  • Present research results through reports and the publication of scientific papers, conference presentations, and technology demonstrations where warranted and desired bringing visibility to the Center and KAUST
  • Supervise or co-supervise industry sponsored research activities of PhD students and post-doctoral research associates, including task assignment, monitoring the progress of tasks, and providing technical guidance and mentoring as required.

  • Technical Communications:  Ability to read and understand technical publications, scan them for marketable content, and translate this content to industry clients from other fields.
  • Expertise and Technical Knowledge: Excellent judgment, tack and discretion when dealing with confidential matters.
  • Strong links to Academia: Understands academic working processes and has work experience in Academia or is even co-author on a scientific publication.
  • Entrepreneurial skills: Successful track of awards/fund raising or managing small enterprises.
  • Experience in the capture of external funding for research including the identification of funding opportunities, white paper development, proposal preparation, communications with agency and corporate technical points of contact, and presentations to potential industry, clients and/or funding organizations
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively to a broad audience within both academia and industry
  • Knowledge of project management principles, and experience in putting these into practice
  • Experience in independent research and problem-solving, while maintaining close interaction with other research groups
  • Skill in accessing, searching and understanding primary scientific literature across a range of disciplines, combined with ability to interpret and synthesize information from disparate sources
  • Familiarity with organizational units of KAUST that support faculty research and development activities (IED, OSR)
  • Broad knowledge of current research trends that are relevant to the mission of the Center
  • Experience supervising the research activities of small teams
  • Flexibility, eagerness and passion for the results aiming to achieving the best performance of the activities in the Center

  • PhD degree in biological or environmental sciences, with a minimum of 6 years of experience in a research environment
  • At least 3 years of experience in academic administration
  • At least 6 years of experience in academic administration
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple forms of communication, along with solid time management, teamwork and organizational skills
  • Entrepreneurial experience
  • Management of innovation, research and development teams in Center relevant research fields
