Offer Description

A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for MSc student or for an BSc degree holder enrolled in a non-academic degree course (BI), within the R&D Project Montanha Viva – Intelligent Predictive System for Mountain Plant Vigor and Information and Decision Support in Environmental Sustainability (PD21-00009), funded by Fundação La Caixa and promoted by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, taking place at the C-MAST ‐ Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technology, Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the following conditions:

Objectives:

Application and development of Precision Agriculture technologies (processing of local and remote images using Artificial Intelligence algorithms and Information and Communication Technology - ICT devices) to:

(1) Development of a web platform for information, alerts and decision support: Development of the web platform for information visualization and decision support; Implementation and integration of the module in the web platform; Integration of the web platform with prototypes for monitoring and experimentation in a test environment.

(2) The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 3 scientific publications (2 in international conferences and 1 in international peer-reviewed journals) during the fellowship period.

 

Work plan:

The grant comprises research and development of Precision Farming technologies for the development of web-based information, alert and decision support platform; and experimental testing and validation of prototypes in real environment. The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 3 scientific publications (2 in international conferences and 1 in international peer-reviewed journals) during the fellowship period.

Place of Work:

The work will be developed at the premises of C-MAST‐Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technologies and Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the scientific guidance of Professor Pedro Dinis Gaspar.

 

Fellowship duration and conditions:

The fellowship is scheduled to start in June 2024 for a period of 12 months.The activity is in the regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.The fellowship can be renewed, with a favorable opinion from the supervisor to the project's end date.

Skills/Qualifications

Hold an undergraduate degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar and meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to a master’s degree (MSc) degree in Eletromechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or enrolled in a non-academic degree course;

The proof of registration in a cycle of studies leading to the MSc degree or proof of registration in a non-academic degree course is required for the fellowship contract.

The BI awarded to undergraduate who are enrolled in courses that do not lead to an academic degree can only be granted for a maximum period of one year.

The BI awarded to undergraduate who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the execution of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, a cumulative period of two years in this type of research fellowship, followed or interpolated.

Benefits

A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of € 990.98 according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores .

The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

Selection process

The selection and ranking of the candidates will be carried out in the first phase based on the following parameters and on a scale from 0 to 20: A - Curriculum vitae (30%); B - Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (60%); C - Fluency in oral and written English (10%).

A second evaluation phase, consisting in an interview, which can be done by video conference, will assess their profile as a researcher, which will take into account aspects such as specific knowledge and proven experience in the field, motivation, availability, commitment, among other aspects. The final classification will be calculated as the average between the classification obtained in the first phase (50% weighting) and the classification obtained in the interview (50% weighting), and expressed in the scale of 0 to 20 points.

Complaint and Appeal Procedures:

After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
