CoLAB ForestWISE® is a Collaborative Laboratory focused on forest and fire issues through the development of (co)research, innovation and knowledge transfer and technology activities. Our goal is to increase and improve sustainable forest management in Portugal, the competitiveness of the Portuguese forestry sector and to reduce negative consequences of large rural fires. CoLAB ForestWISE® currently leads or participates in national and international large scale and impact projects in the forest and fire areas.

CoLAB ForestWISE® opens position for one Project Technician, in the scope of RESIST Project - Regions for climate change resilience through Innovation, Science and Technology, funded by Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON), call HORIZON-MISS-2021-CLIMA-02.

The RESIST project aims to develop innovation demonstration projects in four regions and transfer knowledge and innovative solutions to eight other European regions as a way of increasing their capacity to adapt to climate change. One of the project's demonstrators will be in the Central Region, aimed at developing solutions to promote more effective forest management and enhancement, addressing ways of organising and managing Integrated Landscape Management Areas (IMAs) and Village Condominiums.

Position: European Project Technician in the scientific area of social sciences, forest management, natural resources, or environmental sciences - one position.

Summary description of the function:

Under the supervision of the CTO of CoLAB ForestWISE and the RESIST project coordination, the Project Technician to be hired will have the following responsibilities:

  • Monitoring and implementing the various actions planned, particularly in terms of analysing and following up on the initiatives in progress for the grouped management of the Centre region (Coimbra region) or other regions that may be necessary;
  • Implement and organise workshops, surveys and/or interviews with the community and stakeholders, using participatory methodologies and group dynamics;
  • Collect, analyse and process data from interviews, surveys and workshops using different software and methodologies (e.g. SPSS, NVIVO);
  • Developing and implementing collaborative strategies and active participation in the various case studies, particularly in the AIGP and Village Condominiums;
  • Identify potential solutions and initiatives (relevant, corporate and social technologies at national and international level - benchmarking);
  • Preparing project progress reports and disseminating results in scientific publications;
  • Identifying opportunities and developing all the initiatives that can contribute to the realisation of the activities associated with the project;
  • Represent CoLAB ForestWISE, when requested, at events and initiatives relevant to the People and Policies work line.

Skills/Qualifications

Degree or master's degree in social sciences, forestry sciences and engineering, natural resources sciences, environmental sciences, or related areas.

If the qualification has been acquired by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 341/2007, of 12 October, regulated by Order No. 227/2017, of 25 July and updated by Decree-Law No. 66/2018, published in the Diário da República (1st Series, No. 157, of 16 August 2018), having any formalities established in this document be complied with by the effective date of the hiring.

Personal skills:

  • Organised, self-motivated and results-oriented;
  • Ease of dealing with different interlocutors;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and teamwork spirit;
  • Availability and flexible working hours;
  • Driving licence for light vehicles.

Specific Requirements

Among others, the following are prioritized:

  • Professional experience in forest management, natural resources, environmental sciences or social sciences;
  • Experience in organising communication, dissemination and knowledge transfer initiatives, especially for the forestry sector;
  • Rural sociology, socio-ecological systems, stakeholder interaction (interviews, surveys) or participatory processes (role of facilitator, dynamiser, moderator in group dynamics);
  • Experience in developing dissemination activities in national and European projects;
  • Statistical analysis, data processing and scientific writing;
  • Oral and written command of Portuguese and English;
  • Availability for national and international travel;
  • Working experience with public and private forestry organisations and other forestry sector players in Portugal;
  • Experience in participating in and/or managing research and/or consultancy projects.

Benefits

The Project Technician to be hired will be entitled to a fixed-term employment contract, within the framework of the RESIST Project, with a fixed monthly salary of between TRU 20 and TRU 32 to be defined according to the Curriculum Vitae and the experience presented and proven.


Selection process
  • Interview with candidates with curricular evaluation equal to or greater than 14 points.
  • The final classification will be the weighted average of the curriculum evaluation, which will assume a weight of 60%, and the interview, which will represent 40%.
  • Selection of the candidate with the best final ranking.
  • The jury reserves the right to decide not to select any candidate if they agree that none of the candidates has the profile required.

Additional comments

Contract period: Uncertain. The contract will be signed, for an uncertain term, to ensure the execution of the RESIST project, identified above, which despite having an uncertain duration, is estimated to last for at least 24 (twenty-four) months, without affecting any possible changes.

This contract will be signed to ensure the replacement of Susana Rodrigues, Project Technician, whose contract is suspended due to the exercise of a public office, with an estimated duration until October 2025, without prejudice to a possible reappointment.

Workplace:

The work will be carried out in Vila Real, with travelling (whenever justified) to national partners, demonstration areas and RESIST partner countries.
