Offer Description

A tender is hereby opened for the award of one (1) Postdoc Research Grant (PRG) in the context of the project “Valorising and balancing the ecosystem service benefits offered by legumes, and legume-based cropped systems” (LegumES; Grant agreement ID: 101135512) at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Economics and Management or Economic and Social Geography.

2. Funding Source: European Commission – Horizon Europe.

3. Admission Requirements: Doctor's Degree in Environmental Economics or Urban and Regional Development. Selection criteria are:

  • Affinity in the area of global change and adaptation/mitigation measures, to evaluate the effectiveness, impacts, costs and benefits of adaptation/mitigation strategies to global change.
  • Experience with the development and application of spatially explicit hydro-environmental-economic models.
  • Knowledge of spatial environmental-economic modeling, and related experience with integrated modeling software (e.g., InVEST, SWAT, GAMS), GIS (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spreadsheets (e.g. Excel).
  • Experience with databases, data management, data analysis and data representation.
  • Experience in preparing project proposals, research reports, literature reviews, and publishing scientific articles.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, planning and organization skills, and a spirit of initiative and proactivity.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, high personal professional standards, independence, motivation and commitment to the research project.
  • Excellent oral and written language skills in English and Portuguese.

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act .

4. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they have obtained their doctoral degree less than three years ago and if they comply with the provisions of paragraph 2 of article 2 of the Research Fellow Statute as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, as well as the provisions in article 8 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of UAVR . The BIPD can only be granted if the following requirements are, cumulatively, met:

  • The doctoral degree was obtained in the three years prior to the date of submission of the scholarship application;
  • The post-doctoral research is carried-out in a host entity different from the entity where the research work that led to the award of the doctoral degree was carried out;
  • The research activities do not require post-doctoral experience;
  • The research activities have a development and execution period equal to or less than three years;
  • The grant holder does not exceed, with the celebration of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this type of scholarship, consecutive or interpolated.
  • 5. Work plan: The grant holder will develop and apply innovative approaches to environmental assessment and spatially explicit (environmental-economic) modeling to assess the multiple ecosystem services and values of legume-based cropping systems. Within this general objective, the grant holder's main functions include: (i) analyzing and managing relevant hydro-bio-physical and socio-economic databases; (ii) development and application of spatially explicit hydro-environmental-economic modeling approaches, for the assessment of the multiple services, costs and benefits of legume-based cropping systems; (iii) test and validate these modeling approaches against observed (spatially explicit) data and information; (iv) communicate the work with colleagues, interested partners and clients through dialogue, public presentations, research reports and scientific articles; and (v) prepare project proposals, research reports, literature reviews and scientific publications and, as assigned, perform various work-related tasks.

    6. Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Grant Holder, as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of UAVR , Regulation no. 292/2020, published in Diário da República, no. 61, 2.ª Série, of March 26th ; Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

    7. Workplace: The work will be carried out at the Department of Environment and Planning of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Peter Roebeling.

    8. Duration of the grant: The grant duration will be twelve (12) months, starting in April of 2024, and may be renewed for additional periods of 12 months up to the maximum limit of approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 5 and 6 of article 8, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, 2.ª Série, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of UAVR ).

    9. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1.646,00, according to the table of monthly maintenance allowance amounts set out in Annex III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of UAVR , subject to any updates that may be applicable. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan.

    10. Selection methods: Candidates will be evaluated based on their résumé, aptitude and motivation (first stage of the evaluation), including the relevance of their previous experiences in modeling, research and projects (50%), research reports and publications (35%) and cover letter (15%). The Jury may decide on the need to interview a selected number of candidates (second stage of the evaluation), namely the top-3 of best classified candidates from the first stage of the evaluation. The interview invitation will be sent by e-mail and held in person or by tele-/videoconference. In this case, the final classification will be obtained based on the weighted average of the results from the evaluations of the first stage (60% weight) and the second stage (40% weight). The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any candidate if none of the candidates meet minimum requirements (total final mark greater than 50%).

    11. Composition of the Selection Jury: Jury president: Dr. Peter Roebeling, Assistant Researcher; Permanent jury members: Prof. Teresa Fidélis, Assistant Professor with Aggregation, and Prof. Filomena Martins, Associate Professor; Alternate jury members: Dr. Nelson Abrantes, Assistant Researcher, and Prof. Fátima Alves, Assistant Professor with Aggregation. All jury members are from UAVR.

    12. Deadline for applications and how to submit applications: The call is open from 19-03-2024 to 02-04-2024, and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted.

    Applications must be formalized by sending, via e-mail, a letter of application accompanied by the following documents:

    • Research grant application form (Formulário de candidatura );
    • Cover letter, addressed to the Jury president;
    • Curriculum vitae, detailed and signed;
    • Copies of academic certificates / academic grades;
    • Declaration of honor ; and
    • The name and contact details (position, e-mail, address) of two arbitrators available to provide information about the candidate (to be contacted, if necessary, to verify information provided in other documents).

    13. Form of publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be published within a maximum period of 60 working days counting from the deadline for submitting applications, through notification of the candidates. The candidates will be notified on the decision of the Selection Jury, with a period of 10 working days being set for the purpose of a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the draft final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, comment on this decision. An appeal may be made against the final results to the Rector, to be presented within 10 working days of the respective notification.

    14. Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until 30-09-2024, for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
