The Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences hereby opens this Call for Applications for one research grant to support research activities at the projects currently under development at the Neurocognition and Language (NCL) Research Group of the Center for Psychology of the University of Porto, financed by own funds under, supervision of Dr. Alessandra S. Souza and Prof. São Luís Castro.

 

1. Research field / Scientific area: Psychology

 

2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the research grant, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

  • Master in Psychology, subfield of Health and Clinical Psychology
  • Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in the area Psychology, or be the holder of a Master degree in Psychology enrolled in a non‐academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.
  • Research experience in the field of Experimental Psychology
  •  

    If the candidate holds a degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions and Article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018 of 3 August, and any formalities established therein be fulfilled up to the date of the contracting act.

     

     

    3. Preferred requirements:

  • Master dissertation in a topic relevant to the topics currently pursued in the NCL group, namely: climate change adaptation, studies on basic cognitive processes (e.g., memory, attention, decision making) and individual differences in cognitive abilities;
  • Documented research experience;
  • (Co-)Authorship of scientific publications;
  • Documented experience in the preparation of experimental tasks, including the selection of stimuli, task design, translation and adaptation of scales, and task programming, preferably for the online format;
  •  

  • Documented experience in data analysis using software such as R, RStudio, JASP, MATLAB, SPSS, among others.
  • Experience with eye-tracking data-collection;
  • Documented proficiency in English (the submission of samples of original written text in English will be accepted as documentary evidence).

    4. Work Plan:

    The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:

  • Review of the literature on topics relevant to the ongoing projects;
  • Collaboration in the conceptualization of empirical studies;
  • Translation and adaptation of relevant scales to Portuguese;
  • Adaptation of experimental paradigms;
  • Implementation of studies for online or lab-based data collection;
  • Data collection and the update of a permanent record of the methodology used and session logs;
  • Collaboration in the analysis of the data and the preparation of research reports;
  • Contribution to the writing and revision of scientific articles to be submitted to international journals;
  • Presentation in scientific conferences;
  • Organization and participation in project meetings;
  • Participation in the general activities of the research group as deemed appropriate.

    5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

    The present call is governed by the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th of August, in its current version), the University of Porto Regulations for Research Fellowships approved by the Regulation n.º 184/2021  (published in the Series II of the DR, of 3rd March), the Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions and the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015, of January 7.

     

    6. Workplace:

    The workplace will be at Center for Psychology of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Alessandra S. Souza and Prof. Dr. São Luís Castro. 

     

    7. Duration:

    The grant will last for 8 months (possibly renewable until the end of the project for the same or different periods, depending on the existence of budgetary allocation, but not exceeding the project completion date), on an exclusive basis.

     

     

     

     

    8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

    The monthly maintenance allowance is 1.199,64 €, according to FCT. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences by bank transference. In addition, the grant holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.

     

    9. Evaluation methods:

    Evaluation methods are: curricular evaluation (CE) and, if the selection panel deems it necessary, an

    interview (I) to the three candidates with highest score in the CE evaluation process. The final classification, in a scale from 0 to 100 points, will be obtained by applying the following formula: 0,8 x CE + 0,2 x I.

    In case the interview is unnecessary, the final score corresponds to the CE score.

    The EC will consider the following factors (for which documentary evidence should be provided) with their respective weighting:

  • Dissertation relevant to the topics pursued in the NCL and the classification obtained (25%)
  • Experience with experimental research (15%)
  • Experience in preparing experimental tasks (15%)
  • Experience with data analysis (20%)
  • (Co-)Authorship of scientific publications (15%)
  • English proficiency (5%)
  •  

    In the event that the selected scholarship holder withdraws, the final ranking list of candidates in this competition may be used to replace them. If none of the candidates demonstrates that they have the profile indicated to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to the competition.

    11. Disclosure of the results:

    Evaluation results will be communicated by email to the address provided by the candidates in the application form.

    In compliance with the provisions of the Article 121 of the Code of Administrative Procedure (“Código do Procedimento Administrativo”), after being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal.

     

     

     

     

     

    12. Submission of applications:

    12.1 The Call for Applications is open until 08 February 2024, for 10 working days (until 23.59 Lisbon time).

    12.3 Applications must be accompanied by the following documents:

     

  • Curriculum vitae, indicating full name, address and email contact;
  • Copy of the Bachelor’s Degree Certificate(s), indicating the final classification, and degree recognition and conversion of the classification to the Portuguese scale in case it has been obtained in a foreign Higher Education Institution (the recognition may be delivered until the contracting act; however, the non-submission at the moment of the application implies the non-consideration of the classification for curricular evaluation purposes);
  • If the candidate has taken part in research project(s), a statement from the candidate about the research project(s), indicating the name of the project supervisor, the title and duration of the project and the type of collaboration;
  • Eligibility declaration (in accordance with the draft attached to this call);
  • Motivation letter in English;
  • Any other documents the candidate deems relevant for the appreciation of their merit;

    12.3 If the above-mentioned documents in points a) to d) are not submitted in the application, it will result in the administrative exclusion of the candidates.

     

    12.4 Applicants may also add other documents they consider relevant for curriculum evaluation.

     

    12.5 Documents must be attached directly to the application, without links to external platforms/drives. In order to guarantee the reading of all documents, the preferred recording format is the Portable Document Format (.pdf). The files must be labelled with the applicant's first and last name and must not exceed 5 MB. They can be compressed into .zip format.
