Offer Description
Work Plan: The fellow will participate in project tasks related to image annotation and segmentation using advanced techniques and GPU resources. This scholarship aims to explore image annotation and segmentation by developing and adjusting the necessary tools and software. Tasks include literature review and analysis of available systems, followed by the construction of annotated datasets for fine-tuning existing models. A GPU cluster will be available for evaluation and, if feasible, utilized to accelerate the image annotation process and model training. Possible results to investigate: 1. Literature review and system analysis 2. Construct annotated datasets 3. Develop or adjust software tools 4. Evaluate GPU cluster usage 5. Train and fine-tune models 6. Integrate processes and models The activity will also include writing and submitting scientific articles and reports and participating in research centre team events. The Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to NOVA.id.FCT, on an exclusive basis.
Workplace: The Researcher’s workplace will be in the Informatics Department, NOVA School of Science and Technology, located at the Campus of Caparica, Portugal, under the scientific advisory of Professor Doctor Rui Nóbrega. The contracting party is NOVA.id.FCT – “Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da FCT”.
6. Fellowship duration: The fellowship will have a duration of 3 months, renewable for another 3.

Skills/Qualifications
2. Recipients’ profile/category: Applications are open to students enrolled in a PhD Program in Computer Science or a similar program, and who meet the following specific requirements: a) Experience in programming, remote sensing and in processing and classifying objects in images. b) Previous experience with Python programming using libraries such as NumPy, TensorFlow, or PyTorch. c) Proficiency in the English language. d) They must be enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence. Documents proving this situation must be presented, at the latest, until the scholarship contracting phase, and may be replaced by a declaration of honour before that. Academic records with detailed grades transcript must be submitted in the application phase.

Benefits
7. Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The scholarship amount corresponds to €1.259,64, based on the table of values for scholarships directly awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country, with monthly payment made via bank transfer.
Eligibility criteria
8. Selection criteria: A classification will be made, on a scale of 0 to 20, taking into account the weighting of the following selection methods: a) curricular assessment (50%) and b) prior knowledge of the concepts and technologies relevant to the execution of the project (50%). The scholarship may not be awarded if applications are not suitable. The list of candidates ranked in the first three places of the first phase, as well as the respective documentation considered relevant about them, will be submitted for approval to the Portuguese Army, the body responsible for the project “PR3248 - B0038/2023 – Estudo da viabilidade de geração automática de malhas estruturais e efeitos das explosões”. Only successful candidates will be considered.
Selection process
9. Composition of the Selection Jury: The jury will have the following members: • Chairman: Professor Doutor Nuno Cavalheiro Marques; • Member: Professor Doutor Rui Nóbrega; • Member: Professor Doutor Fernando Birra; • Substitute Member: Professor Doutor João Magalhães; • Substitute Member: Professor Doutor Nuno Correia. 10. Form of advertising/notification of results: The candidates will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list. After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or a hierarchical appeal, within 30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the email address [email protected] .
