Summary of the announcement:

By order of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation of 04/01/2024, by delegation of powers, the opening of an international selection competition was authorized for 1 (one) post of junior doctoral researcher on an exclusive dedication basis, to carry out scientific research activities in the scientific area of Agricultural Sciences with specialization in animal nutrition, on an uncertain fixed-term employment contract, under the Labor Code, with a view to carrying out research duties, under the Program Contract for the Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Technologies (IITAA), through programmatic funding, Refª UIDP/00153/2020, approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P., exclusively from the State Budget.

The place of work is at IITAA, located on the Angra do Heroísmo Campus of the University of the Azores, 9700-042 Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, Portugal.

The monthly remuneration to be awarded is that provided for in article 15(1)(a) of the RJEC, corresponding to level 33 of the single remuneration table, approved by Ministerial Order no. 1553-C/2008, of December 31, updated by Decree-Law no. 108/2023, of November 22, and is 2,294.95 euros gross.

Ad text:

1. By order of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation of 04/01/2024, by delegation of powers, the opening of an international selection competition was authorized for 1 (one) post of junior doctoral researcher on an exclusive dedication basis, to carry out scientific research activities in the scientific area of Agricultural Sciences with specialization in animal nutrition, on an uncertain fixed-term employment contract, under the Labor Code, with a view to carrying out research duties, under the Program Contract for the Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Technologies (IITAA), through programmatic funding, Refª UIDP/00153/2020, approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P., exclusively from the State Budget.

2. Applicable legislation: under Decree no. 57/2016, of August 29, amended by Law no. 57/2017, of July 19, which approves a system for hiring doctoral graduates aimed at stimulating scientific and technological employment in all areas of knowledge (RJEC), and the Labor Code, approved by Law no. 7/2009, of February 12, in its current wording.

 

3. The selection board is made up as follows: Chairman Prof. Dr. Alfredo Borba, Full Professor, Researcher in Charge; Members: Prof. Dr. Carlos Fernando Mimoso Vouzela, Assistant Professor, who will replace the Chairman when he is absent or impeded, and Prof. Dr. João ad Silva Madruga, Associate Professor; Alternate members: Professor Célia C. Silva, Associate Professor with Aggregation; and Professor Ana Margarida Pereira, Assistant Professor.

4. Place of work: Instituto de Investigação e Tecnologias Agrárias e do Ambiente (IITAA), located on the Angra do Heroísmo University Campus of the University of the Azores, 9700-042 Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, Portugal.

 

5. 6. The competition is open to national, foreign and stateless candidates who hold a doctoral degree in areas related to Agricultural Sciences with a specialization in animal nutrition and a scientific and professional curriculum vitae that reveals a profile appropriate to the activity to be carried out. If the doctorate was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16.

7. The general requirements for admission to the competition are:

- PhD degree in Agricultural Sciences and more specifically with a focus on Animal Nutrition, use of NIR in the nutritional valorization of conventional and non-conventional forages, Mitigation of gas production by ruminants and other related areas.

- Publications preferably on Animal Nutrition topics, namely the mitigation of greenhouse gases produced by ruminants and the nutritional valorization of forages.

- Experience in determining methane production in ruminants.

8. The selection of the doctorate to be hired will be carried out by evaluating the scientific and curricular trajectory of the candidates. This assessment will focus on the relevance, quality and timeliness of: a) the scientific and technological production of the last five years considered most relevant by the candidate and associated with the subject area of the competition; b) the research activities carried out in the last five years considered to have the greatest impact by the candidate and associated with the subject area of the competition; c) involvement in outreach and knowledge dissemination activities, which promote scientific practice and culture, considered to be of greater importance by the candidate and related to the position now up for competition; d) activities in the management of science, technology and innovation programs and projects.

The five-year period referred to above may be extended by the Jury, at the candidate's request, when justified by the suspension of scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other legally protected situations of unavailability for work.

9. The position is described in detail in the following paragraphs:

This position is aimed at carrying out research activities under the research line of the IITAA strategic project "Islands as laboratories for global sustainability" coordinated by Professor João da Silva Madruga. The rumen microbiota is essential for the efficiency and assimilation of nutrients in ruminant feed, with consequences for the concomitant production/emission of methane. The objectives of this project are therefore: 1) to identify the microbial factors that affect efficiency and methane production in dairy cows, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomics; 2) to identify the biochemical factors that affect efficiency and methane production in dairy cows; 3) to isolate rumen strains with probiotic potential and characterize them genomically, metagenomically and physiologically.

10. Selection methods and curriculum evaluation criteria:

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of an integrated assessment of the candidate's scientific and curricular background (AC with a weight of 90%) and an interview (EPS with a weight of 10%).

10.1 The first component of the curriculum evaluation will be based on the candidate's CV, taking into account the following items:

- Scientific production in journals with an impact factor - 50% of AC;

- Participation in R&D projects, valuing the % of time allocated to each one, duly proven - 10% of AC;

- Professional experience (30% of AC), considering the execution of activities inherent to the job and their degree of complexity, duly proven The classification of this parameter is the result of the sum of the scores obtained in the paragraphs below:

a) Experience in ruminant animal nutrition (20 points).

b) Experience in using NIR (20 points).

c) Experience in determining methane production in ruminants (20 points).

d) Experience in NIR calibration (20 points).

e) Collaborating in the planning and preparation of project reports and other means of dissemination; preferably with experience in scientific dissemination (20 points).

Candidates who score less than 50% in the AC will be excluded from the procedure and will not be called for a professional interview.

 

10.2 - The second assessment component is the interview and has a weight of 10%.

 

11. The final classification system for candidates is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100.

 

12. The jury will decide by means of a reasoned roll-call vote in accordance with the selection criteria adopted and published, and abstentions will not be permitted.

13. Minutes are drawn up of the jury meetings, which contain a summary of what took place, as well as the votes cast by each member and their respective reasons, and are made available to candidates on request.

 

14. Once the selection criteria have been applied, the selection board will draw up an ordered list of successful candidates with their respective ranking.

 

15. The selection board's final decision is approved by the institution's top manager, who is also responsible for deciding on the appointment.

16. Formalization of applications:

16.1 - Applications are formalized by means of a request addressed to the President of the Jury, containing the internal reference (Euraxess), full name, filiation, number and date of identity card, Citizen Card, or civil identification number, tax identification number, date and place of birth, marital status, profession, residence and contact address, including email address and telephone contact;

16.2 - The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in points 6 and 7 for admission to this competition, namely: a) a copy of the certificate or diploma; b) a PDF copy of the doctoral thesis and publications; c) a detailed curriculum vitae, structured in accordance with the items in points 7 and 8; d) other documents relevant to the assessment of qualifications in a related scientific area; e) a brief description of the most relevant scientific activities in the last 5 years (max. 1 page), in accordance with point 10.1 (a-e) of this notice;

16.3 - Candidates must submit their applications and supporting documents to the President of the Jury, to the e-mail address [email protected] with knowledge of [email protected] and [email protected] , by the last day of the competition's opening period, which will be 10 working days after publication of the competition on Euraxess.

17. Candidates who complete their application incorrectly or who do not meet the requirements of this competition will be disqualified from taking part in the competition. The selection board has the right to ask any candidate, in case of doubt, to produce supporting documents.

18. Candidates who do not obtain a final mark of 60% or more will not be admitted to the competition on the grounds of absolute merit.

19. False statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.

20. The list of admitted and excluded candidates, as well as the final ranking list, will be published at the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation, and the selected candidate will be notified by e-mail with return receipt.

21. Prior Hearing and Deadline for Final Decision: once the results have been published, candidates have 10 working days to make their case. In the following 5 working days, counting from the deadline for submitting complaints, the jury's final decisions will be issued, to be posted at the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation, F.P. Within a period of no more than 90 working days, counting from the deadline for submitting applications, the jury's final decisions will be issued.

 

22. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated and may be terminated until the final list of candidates has been approved and will expire when the job on offer has been filled. The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation reserves the right not to award the vacancy for reasons attributable to the funding body.

23. 25. Under Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of 04/27/2016 and Law No. 67/98, of October 26, personal data collected by the entity are intended only for recruitment. The personal data collected by the entity, through this request, are intended to assess whether candidates are suitable for the position requested and for the preliminary calculation of remuneration, bonuses and benefits of candidates who are admitted to recruitment. The data filled in the application is essential data when considering the selection of candidates, which may affect the efficiency and result of the respective application, if candidates do not provide them. The personal data of unsuitable candidates will be kept by the entity for a period of five years, for the purposes of subsequent recruitment.
