The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics.The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.


 The position

A temporary position as scientist within cell biology/immunology is available for a period of up to three years at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science  (NCFS). The position is affiliated with the research group Genetics  (RGG), and is a part of a strategic action to increase the competence within cell biology and immunology at NCFS.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

NCFS is a part of The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics  (BFE) and undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research at the Norwegian University of Fisheries takes place in close collaboration with the faculty and university research environments, as well as national and international partners. Research activity is provisionally organized into the groups of: Living Marine Resources, Sea Food Science, Fish Immunology and Vaccinology, Aquaculture, Genetics, Marine Drug Discovery, Resource Management, Marine Management and Resource Economics.


The position’s field of research or work

The researcher will be appointed to the Fishcomm (RCN funded) project which aims to study exchange of mitochondria between primary cells from Atlantic salmon. The exchange of mitochondria is maybe a "rescue phenomenon" or/and simply a mechanism for exchange of cellular matter which may contribute to cell viability.

The person to be hired will do the research in collaboration with members of RGG and other research groups at NCFS and UiT. The candidate is responsible for supervision of Bachelor (BSc), Master (MSc) and possibly Doctorate (PhD) students.


Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • A Norwegian doctoral degree in cell biology/immunology or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality.
  • Competence in cell biology.
  • Competence to isolate and cultivate primary cells from fish, and work on cell lines.
  • Competence, theoretically and practically, to use dye techniques to stain mitochondria, cell membrane and other cell organelles.
  • Competence to study gene expression.
  • Competence using advanced microscopes, beyond ordinary lab microscopes (light- and fluorescence microscopes).
  • Competence in writing publications (read more below at "Application").
  • Experience in supervision of Msc and PhD students.
  • Driver´s licence (equivalent to or Norwegian cl. B).
  • A good command of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language, in addition to good English language skills. 

The candidate must be able to work independently and strengthen the field of the position at RGG. We search for the candidate that is motivated and ambitious with with good communication and collaborative skills. We also expect the candidate to work in a structured and timely manner, and to be inclusive towards members and students of RGG, the department and other research groups at UiT and internationally.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.  The application must include:

The remuneration for a research position is in accordance with the State salary code 1109. The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In a research position you will spend most of the time on research and development work. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
