Researcher position in the field of migration

At the the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen, there is a vacancy for a permanent position as a researcher in the field of migration.

The position is affiliated to externally financed project(s). The first three years the position is financed by the project ‘Contested Knowledges in and through Asylum Litigation (ASYKNOW)’ funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant and led by Principal Investigator Marry-Anne Karlsen, Associate Professor in social anthropology, University of Bergen.



About the project/work tasks:

ASYKNOW will develop new conceptual tools for understanding the role of expert knowledge in asylum litigation. The project investigates how expert knowledge is mobilized, contested and constituted in the asylum appeal process in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, and combines an ethnography of legal processes with legal archaeology.

We are looking for a researcher who can conduct the research in Germany. This involves conducting ethnographic research focusing on how expert knowledge is deployed in the appeal process of asylum related cases in Germany, as well as a legal archaeology study of selected court cases in Germany. The researcher is also expected to contribute to the development of the overall project in terms of comparison, integration and dissemination of knowledge. Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within in social anthropology, geography or gender studies. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience with externally funded projects.
  • Experience from migration research or legal ethnography in Germany is a requirement.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
  • Applicants must have good command of the German and a Scandinavian language.

In assessing the candidates, a review of both the quality and the breadth of the candidate's research will be conducted. Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.

The research position demands that the applicant has their regular workplace at the University of Bergen.

Researchers with doctoral degrees in permanent positions have the opportunity to apply for personal promotion to researcher 1183.



We can offer:
  • A good and professionally challenging working environment.
  • Gross annual salary as researcher, code 1109, of NOK 615 700, - (pay grade 63 according to the state salary scale). For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. Further promotions are made according to length of service.

The following premise forms the basis for the post as research scientist:
  • The researcher must be member of the research group to which the field belongs. 
  • As far as possible, salary expenses must be 100 % externally financed. 
  • The researcher must actively contribute to obtaining external project funds for the professional environment, to both them and others, from NFR, the EU and other sources. 
  • The research activity is expected to be financed by the project the researcher, and the research group around the researcher, works with. 
  • The head of department can order the researcher to work towards specific research projects. 
  • The researcher can hold positions, participate in committees, selections, etc. within UiB. 
  • The researcher does not normally have a teaching obligation, but is expected to guide master’s and PhD students, to the extent that this is a natural part of the research activity in the research group. 
  • The researcher can apply for competence promotion according to the regulations for promotion. 
  • The basis for the position ceases if the project funding ceases, and a new law on state employees etc. on termination and preferential rights will be made valid.
