Researcher

There is a vacancy for a position as researcher in marine geology/volcanology at the Department of Earth science . The position is for a period 8 months and is associated with Center for Deep Sea Research and the Norwegian Offshore Directorate.



About the project/work tasks

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate has for the last 15 years collaborated with Center for Deep Sea Research at the University of Bergen with mapping and exploration of the deep sea within Norwegian jurisdiction. 

This collaboration is now extended with the employment of a temporary researcher. It is expected that the researcher focuses on research related to geological processes in the deep sea, and research questions of relevance for the Norwegian Offshore Directorate. The researcher shall participate with scientific understanding of the development of the Norwegian Sea based on newly collected 2D seismic data. Further, the researcher will be involved in the geological work at the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, and it is expected that the researcher works from the directorate’s office when relevant. The researcher is expected to participate in the planning and execution of research cruises led by the Center for Deep Sea Research or the Norwegian Offshore Directorate. The directorate need archiving of manganese crusts collected on joint cruises in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Center for Deep Sea research has a large collection of rocks, maps and ROV-video. The researcher should have an overview of the data and contribute to the make these data available.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within marine geology, geochemistry, petrology or volcanology or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded. 
  • Publications on relevant topics, and experience from research cruises is a requirement. 
  • Applicants must be able to work independently, in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate effectively with others. 
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English. 
  • Applicants must have good command of the Norwegian language.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position: 

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.



We can offer:
  • A good and professionally stimulating working environment. 
  • Position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 624 500 (equivalent to pay grade 64) upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
