Researcher:

There is a vacancy for a temporary position as researcher in Evolutionary Development & Physiology in the research group of Dr Patrick Steinmetz at the Michael Sars Centre / University of Bergen. The position is for a period of 19 months and is associated with the NFR FRIPRO grant project 'NUTRIQUI'. The Michael Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) The preferred starting date is 1.12.2024.



About the project/work tasks:

The research group is interested in understanding the evolution and nutritional control of animal growth homeostasis. One of the main research lines of the lab is to study the starvation-induced shrinkage in juveniles of the sea anemone Nematostella. The successful applicant will study the nutritional regulation of cellular quiescence in the sea anemone Nematostella in the frame of the NFR FRIPRO grant 'NUTRIQUI'. The main task of the researcher is to work in close collaboration with a computational biologist to interpret and experimentally validate complementary RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq and single cell RNA-Seq datasets using physiological, imaging and genetic approaches.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within Biology or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • Previous experience working with juvenile Nematostella vectensis is a requirement
  • Previous experience in the analysis of RNA-Seq datasets is a requirement
  • A good command of statistical methodologies and software (R) is a requirement
  • A strong interest in studying the environmental and/or physiological control of developmental processes is a requirement
  • Previous experience in applying physiological, imaging and genetic methods in Nematostella is an advantage
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and to cooperate with others
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position:

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

  • Position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 624 500 (equivalent to pay grade 64) upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant
