Research assistant

At the Department of Sociology, there is a vacancy for a fixed-term part-time position (60% for 24 months from 1 August 2024) as a research assistant on the Horizon Europe project Pro-Coast (A PROactive approach for COmmunities to enAble Societal Transformation). Total employment as a research assistant cannot exceed two years. 

About the project/work tasks:

The project aims to empower coastal communities to conserve and restore biodiversity in local ecosystems. Data is being gathered from 10 cases across diverse European coastal ecosystems using living lab, social-ecological and citizen science approaches. The Pro-Coast team is interdisciplinary, comprising environmental and social scientists and environmental NGOs. The Bergen team is responsible for researching two case studies, one concerning ‘ghost-fishing’, removing discarded fishing gear from the ocean floor, and another concerning the proposed development of the Kilden site on Askøy as a dock and transport and tourist hub. The successful applicant will take the lead in researching these cases, gathering, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data and working with local stakeholders and change agents, under the supervision of Professor Herbert and liaising with the work package leaders responsible for each approach. The working language of the project is English. Fluency in Norwegian and a strong grasp of English are therefore essential.     

Qualifications and personal qualities:

Essential

• Applicants must either hold a good Norwegian Masters’ degree in Sociology, Environmental Management or a similar/equivalent degree, or have submitted their Masters thesis by 30 June 2024 and be able to demonstrate a good grade profile in completed courses.
• Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have excellent organizational and teamworking skills.
• Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
• Applicants must be fluent in Norwegian.

Desirable  

• It would be an advantage to have a demonstrable interest and competence in using mixed methods to investigate socio-cultural phenomena (e.g. bachelors’ or masters’ dissertation).
• It would be an advantage to have a demonstrable interest in ecology/environmental issues.

In assessing the candidates, personal and relational qualities and organizational skills will be emphasized.
