Professor or associate professor of medical ethics and philosophy of science

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care (IGS) a permanent position (50%) as professor or associate professor is available. We are looking for a colleague who, together with the faculty and staff of the department, will contribute to excellence in research and teaching. IGS has teams conducting research in ethics, priority setting, health economics and leadership, and provides teaching of medical and dental students, master students and PhD-students in these subjects. We are looking for a person who primarily can teach research ethics and philosophy of science. We are looking for a person who is in an active phase of his or her career, and who has academic expertise within a research field that is relevant in medical ethics and philosophy of science.



Work tasks/research field:

The person who fills this position shall teach, plan and administer the teaching of students at the Faculty of Medicine. The teaching responsibilities that are assigned to this position are primarily connected to research ethics and philosophy of science for the master, PhD and medical education at the faculty, (among others HELVIT300, HELSAM301, MEDMET901) but also contributes to other teaching the faculty of medicine is responsible for. The person who fills this position shall supervise master students and PhD-students, as well as medical students who write their thesis, as well as take on administrative tasks within a recommendatory time frame. It is expected that the person who fills this position will regularly submit applications to relevant national and international sources for research financing. The person who fills this position shall both initiate and lead research projects and is expected to demonstrate a high level of ambition and good quality with regards to research and teaching, and to participate actively in the strategic planning and academic activities of the department and the faculty.



Qualifications and personal qualities:

Qualified applicants have a doctoral degree in research ethics, philosophy of science, or other  relevant academic field (bioethics, medical ethics, philosophy) and knowledge of the Norwegian health care system. Background on health, preferably MD, and experience with teaching of students in research ethics and philosophy of science. Experience and competence in theoretical and applied research ethics will be highly valued, the person should satisfy the requirements concerning educational competence. The ideal candidate publishes at a high international level, has been successful in applying for grants from national and international sources of financing for research and educational development, and has established, or is in the process of establishing, his or her own research team. Results attained in the course of the last 5-7 years will be given particular weight in evaluation of the application. The ideal candidate also has experience with teaching at the bachelor- and master level or in a programme of professional study, as well as experience with supervision of research fellows. Experience from different national and international research institutions, and the ability to establish international networks will count positively in the evaluation, as will experience with and interest in innovation. When evaluating applicants, we will place significant emphasis on personal qualities and educational qualifications.

Educational competence is a requirement for the position, see guidelines for establishment of a pedagogical portfolio at Center for medical education . The requirement is absolute for appointment as professor while an associate professor will be offered the necessary training if the requirement is not met before appointment.

The language of teaching is normally Norwegian. The person who fills this position must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years after appointment. Language courses will be offered.

    Salary NOK 919 200 (code 1013, pay grade 82). Salary gross p.a. for a full-time position in the state salary scale. In the case of a highly qualified candidate, a higher salary may be considered.
  • Associate professor:
    Salary NOK 708 000 – 732 300 (code 1011, pay grade 71-73), specialist salary NOK 732 300 - 759 100 (code 1011, pay grade 73-75). Salary gross p.a. for a full-time position in the state salary scale. In the case of a highly qualified candidate, a higher salary may be considered.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefits
