The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics  (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics.

The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.


The position

The Norwegian College of Fishery Science  (NCFS) has a vacant position as Professor or Associate Professor within production biology focusing on fish physiology. The position is affiliated with the research group Aquaculture and Environment .

NCFS  is one of three Departments at the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE). The Department undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research activity is provisionally organized into the groups of: Living Marine Resources, Sea Food Science, Genetics, Fish Health, Marine Drug Discovery, Resource Management, Marine Management and Resource Economics.       

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.


The position’s field of research or work

The candidate is expected to contribute to excellent research on relevant research problems within aquaculture and environment. The focus should primarily be within biology/physiology, aquaculture technology and production environment, but may also be related to other central topics within the group, such as feed, nutrition and growth, reproduction and fry biology, as well as environmental (temperature, photoperiod and water quality) and technological challenges related to fish welfare and healthy aquaculture. The research group for aquaculture and environment is part of a broader research environment at NCFS and BFE. Cooperation across research groups, departments and institutions is encouraged.

The position will be assigned to teaching in aquaculture related subjects, as well as supervision on master and PhD levels. We emphasize collegial cooperation related to planning, implementation and development of our programs. 

The position is further expected to contribute with outreach and dissemination, internally at UIT and to the industry and society in general.


Qualifications

Qualification requirements for the position as Professor:

  • Academic level conforming to established international or national standards for position of Professor in biology/physiology.
  • Documented pedagogical competence as required for the Professor level (see below).

To be awarded a professorship, you must document substantially more extensive research of high quality than that required to be awarded a doctorate degree. You must document academic activity at a high level over the previous six years, and that this points forwards towards continued activity at professorial level. In addition UiT assess applicants according to national guidelines for assessment of professorial competence, decided by the National Faculty Meeting of (subject area). Qualification requirements for the position as Associate Professor:

  • Norwegian doctoral degree in biology/physiology or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality.
  • Documented pedagogical competence (see below).

Additional qualification requirements for both described positions:

  • International recognition within the field.
  • Scientific merits beyond doctoral level.
  • Documented competence within biology and aquaculture technology related to fish production in aquaculture systems.
  • Good knowledge about the fish farming industry.
  • Documented ability to achieve external funding for research.
  • Good command of oral and written English communication. Qualified applicants without knowledge in a Scandinavian language, must be willing to learn Norwegian within maximum three years.
  • Personal characteristics that makes you ambitious, and good to communicate and collaborate. In addition, you must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of the department and the university as a whole.

For both the described positions it is considered an advantage to have knowledge in Norwegian or a Scandinavian language (read more) .

Required pedagogical basic competence

All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their pedagogical competence. You must have acquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at higher education level. This includes basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance.  

How to document required pedagogical basic competence

  • a) Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course. 
  • b) Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor. The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio.

Additional required teaching and supervision qualifications for applicants to position as Professor:

  • Development of the quality of one's own teaching and supervision over time.
  • Experience with teaching and supervision in higher education corresponding to three years in a full-time position.
  • Broad supervision experience, preferably at master's/PhD level.
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in academic communities.

For professor positions, the teaching competence can be developed and documented through a combination of courses and teaching portfolio.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailde description draw up for the position.

  • CV containing a complete overview of education, experience and professional work. 
  • Diplomas, diploma supplements and transcripts (all degrees, in original language and translated). 
  • Letter(s) of recommendation if applicable.
  • Two references with contact details. 
  • Documented pedagogical competence (according to above mentioned qualifications). Applicants for professor positions shall also document supplementary criterias: 
    • Description of and reflection over your work involving development of your teaching and supervision. This should be documented with specific examples that demonstrate development over time, as well as a description of and reflection over the process and result. 
    • Description of experience with supervision at master's and PhD level. In addition to describing the scope of the supervision, you shall also summarize your supervision experience and point to possible development areas. 
    • Description of and reflection over your own leadership, participation and role in development of the educational quality in the academic community. 
  • Documentation of language proficiency corresponding above mentioned requirements.  
  • A list of your academic production. The list of works shall contain the following information:
    • author(s), the work’s title.
    • for articles: the journal’s name and volume, the first and last page of the article, year of publication.
    • for publications: publisher, printer, year of publication, number of pages.
  • Description of the academic production you want to be taken into consideration (academic items, up to ten, whereas the doctoral thesis is regarded as one), stating which works you consider most important. A brief description of the other listed works shall also be included to demonstrate depth of production.
  • A research plan, including potential sources of external funding.

The interview shall among other things, aim to clarify the applicants personal suitability for the position and motivations. The remuneration for Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1013. The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary  - in 2023 this rate is 9 %. The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, Professors and Associate Professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
