Professor / Associate Professor

There is a vacancy for a full professor at the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) within artificial intelligence and education. If there are insufficient qualified applicants for a professorship it may be relevant to appoint an associate professor.

The Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE) located at the Faculty of Psychology is a learning sciences research centre that carries out interdisciplinary research on the technological, pedagogical, cultural, ethical, and legal aspects of learning analytics (LA) and artificial intelligence in education (AIED) and promote the responsible use of technology in education. As an interdisciplinary centre we strive to see research challenges from multiple perspectives. We are a dynamic and including milieu of around 23 persons from including faculty, researchers, adjuncts, postdocs, PhDs candidates, and support staff. All employees are expected to contribute to the success of the centre. With this position we will strengthen our research related to artificial intelligence and education.



Work tasks/research field:

We seek a dynamic, innovative, and passionate researcher and educator with expertise in artificial intelligence and education and a strong publication record in areas such as large language models in education, adaptive learning, artificial/augmented intelligence, hybrid AI-human learning, implementation of AI / policy / privacy, AI literacy, AI and teaching, AI and assessment, and other AI and Education related themes. The ideal candidate will have a strong proven track record of conducting cutting-edge and impactful research, designing and/or evaluating the use of AI-based educational tools, and contributing to the to the evolution of educational practices. Responsibilities
The employee will be a regular member of SLATE’s scientific staff, with privileges and duties following from that, including the following:

  • Contribute to the further development of the interdisciplinary research centre SLATE
  • Develop new and participate in on-going research at SLATE
  • Collaborate with local, national, and international partners on research and project development
  • Vigorously pursue external research/innovation funding from the Norwegian research council, EU, and other possible funding sources
  • Contribute to the design, development, and teaching of SLATE’s course portfolio within learning sciences, educational data science, learning analytics, artificial intelligence in education, learning games, responsible technology, data and AI literacy, and other relevant themes
  • Teaching and Masters/PhD supervision
  • Participate in administrative tasks, meetings and committee work  
  • Provide service to SLATE, UiB, and the profession


Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • A PhD/doctoral degree in a relevant field for the position, such as learning sciences, cognitive science, psychology, educational data science, artificial intelligence, computer/information science, or the equivalent
  • Cutting edge and impactful research within the cross-disciplinary area of human-centred AI in Education (i.e., AI to support human learning, interactive and adaptive learning environments, policy/privacy issues for AI and Education, etc.) is e requirement
  • A strong publishing track record in artificial intelligence and education in high-ranking journals is a requirement
  • Ability to work independently in a structured manner, as well as to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong international network is a requirement
  • Demonstrated strong success in securing externally funded grants is a requirement
  • Strong record of dissemination and outreach is an advantage
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory
  • Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position, please read "Rules for assessing educational competence at UiB ".
    • For position as professor: this is a requirement that must be achieved at the time of application.
    • For position as associate professor: applicants who are unable to document adequate educational competence by the time of application, will be ordered to meet the requirements within two years of assuming office.
  • The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

  • Salary: 
    • Professor: annual salary of NOK 895 500 – 996 000 before taxes (position code 1013) in the state salary scale. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant. 
    • If there are not sufficiently qualified applicants for the position of professor, it may be relevant to fill a position as associate professor: annual salary of NOK 708 000 – 759 100 before taxes (position code 1011) in the state salary scale. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
