Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Humanities at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, Department of Cultural Studies and Languages. The position is vacant from 1 June 2024.

The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions. The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of 3 years. This includes 6 months of administrative/teaching assignments.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the project Petroculture’s Intersections with The Cultural Heritage sector in the context of green transitions (PITCH) led by Professor Dolly Jørgensen. PITCH brings together academic and cultural sector organisation partners in six countries to spur on the processes by which humanities and arts scholarship and public interventions can strengthen citizen engagement with the constantly changing nature of cultural heritage and its relationship to past and present petrocultures to lay the groundwork for rapid, society-wide European green transitions away from a reliance on fossil-fuels. See https://pitch-horizon.eu/ for more information about the project.

The postdoctoral fellow will work primarily on the planned museum interventions in PITCH. The fellow will work closely with the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin, Germany, to identify appropriate items from their collection for a museum intervention and to plan the exhibition of those items. Short work trips to Berlin are expected to make use of the archives and collections. The fellow will also write and co-write scholarly and public-facing publications related to the PITCH museum interventions in English.

The postdoctoral fellow will also be affiliated with the Greenhouse Center for Environmental Humanities, a university-level research center at the University of Stavanger. It supports a growing community of academics who use history, literature, media, religion, philosophy and art to understand how people relate to nature and the environment. We have a dynamic intellectual atmosphere with weekly programming that the new fellow will be expected to participate in. More information about the Greenhouse is available at https://www.uis.no/en/greenhouse

The position is funded by the EU Horizon Europe program and UiS.
