PhD position

There is a vacancy for PhD Research Fellow in inorganic chemistry, material chemistry and catalysis at the Department of Chemistry . The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4 th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department).
The position is part of the project Recyclable Catalysts for Sustainable Polymers from CO2 and Bio-based Epoxides, which is funded as a Starting Grant from the Trond Mohn Research Foundation. The research group is located in brand new laboratory facilities at the Department of Chemistry, UiB.

About the project/work tasks
  • The work will primarily focus on synthesis and subsequent catalysis testing. Initially the focus will be on designing and synthesising coordination complexes and/or organometallic catalysts in combination with polyoxometalates. An important aspect will be the incorporation of suitable cations, including ionic liquids, for the development of solubility-controlled catalysts.
  • The overall aim is to develop efficient catalysts for the production of sustainable polymers, where CO2 will be used as one of the raw materials.
  • The hired candidate will design, synthesise, and characterise hybrid organic-inorganic compounds as potential catalysts for efficient and selective conversion of epoxide and CO2 to polycarbonates.
  • The compounds will be systematically tested in standard processes for epoxide / CO2 copolymerisation, and subsequently in processes with renewable epoxides for a more environmentally friendly production of plastic.
  • The hired candidate will be part of a research team, and will work together with researchers, PhD, MSc and BSc students.

Qualifications and personal qualities
  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in chemistry. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 30.06.2024. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Applicants must have a solid and documented background in either organometallic chemistry or hybrid polyoxometalates, with an emphasis on synthetic methods and the choice of experimental parameters. It is an advantage to have documented competency in both.
  • Documented solid experience with at least one of the following analytical techniques for structure characterisation is required; NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray crystallography or mass spectrometry.
  • Experience with design, synthesis and characterisation of ionic liquids is an advantage.
  • Experience with homogeneous catalysis is an advantage.
  • Experience with other analytical techniques such as IR, GC, GC-MS, and elemental analysis is an advantage.
  • A working knowledge of Norwegian is an advantage.
  • The appointed person must have:
    • good abilities for critical thinking and writing.
    • ability to work in a structured and independent manner, and to collaborate with others.
    • good knowledge of both written and spoken English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD position
