Position as PhD Research Fellow in cellular biology and molecular biology is available at the Department of Biosciences at the University of Oslo. 

The fellowship period is 3 years.Starting date no later than October 1, 2024.

A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

This project aims at characterizing novel molecular mechanisms by which sumoylation regulates gene expression and chromatin in preadipocytes and during adipocyte differentiation. The proposed research also has biomedical relevance, with implications ranging from obesity to metabolic disorders and regenerative medicine. The project will be conducted using mouse and human cells with the possibility to use mouse models. We use traditional biochemistry and cell biology methods as well as state of the art genomics, transcriptomics and mass spectrometry technics. 
The PhD will be supervised by Ass. Prof. Pierre Chymkowitch. The Chymkowitch lab investigates the transcriptional regulation of gene expression by the Small Ubiquitin-like modifier SUMO.

Our group is collaborating with leading laboratories in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and France and this research will be performed within the Section for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Department of biosciences. Research areas within the section encompass gene regulation, enzymology, and structure-function studies of proteins. Several of our research groups are leaders in their respective fields, with vast networks of national and international collaborators.

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
We thus seek a self-driven and highly motivated and competent candidate, with the following formal qualifications:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, or equivalent
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Desired qualifications:

• Experience with cell culture and cell biology technics (applied to adipogenesis would be a plus)
• Molecular biology (RT-qPCR, cloning, purification of nucleic acids, etc)
• Biochemistry (Protein purification / extraction, chromatography, Immunoprecipitation, etc)
• Experience with either RNA-sequencing, ChIP-sequencing, ATAC-seq would be a plus
• Knowledge of transcription, chromatin and epigenetic regulation
• Good presentation and communication skills
• Bioinformatics applied to NGS or mass spectrometry
• Confocal microscopy
• Scientific writing

Candidates without a master’s degree have until 30 June 2024 to complete the final exam.

Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. 

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
