Offer Description

UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Linguistics (language variation, multilingualism, multilectalism, grammar, language and learning, language revitalization, regional/national minority languages, indigenous languages). The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Prof. Øystein Vangsnes . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.

This call is one of 74 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Linguistics as presented by Prof. Vangsnes:

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Linguistics, Language Variation and Language Diversity, including the study of closely related linguistic varieties and also indigenous and minoritized language as presented by Prof. Øystein A. Vangsnes:

The Center for Language, Brain and Learning (C-LaBL), the successor of the AcqVA Aurora Center  (Acquisition, Variation & Attrition), does cutting-edge research on language variation and multilingualism. One of three research domains at the center is dedicated to Learning, both language acquisition/learning per se and the effects of multilingualism and development more broadly defined. Literacy and metalinguistic awareness will be key topics in the Learning domain and the following three language situations will be under particular scrutiny: (i) the acquisition of English by Norwegian children and adolescents and the interplay between school and extramural activities, (ii) the multilectal literacy that characterizes the written practices of Norwegian adolescents, and (iii) the role of the educational system for the revitalization of the Sámi languages. A leitmotif across all the domains of C-LaBL will be ‘linguistic distance’.

Professor Vangsnes , who co-leads the Learning domain in C-LaBL, is currently also the PI of the project Multilectal Literacy in Education , funded by the Research Council of Norway, which through a national network and in collaboration with Dutch partners, investigates and compares the Norwegian and the Frisian/Dutch language situation with a particular focus on children and adolescents and the interaction between language and scholastic development. Professor Vangsnes is furthermore heavily engaged in research pertaining to the Sámi language situation, in particular issues concerning revitalization.

Applicants for the advertised MSCA positions should propose a research project that will strengthen and complement the research in the Learning domain specifically and in C-LaBL more broadly.

Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected] by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application "Arctic MSCA". Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.
