About the position

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) invites applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor/Professor in Sustainability Management.

The concept ‘Sustainability’ is fundamental to many of the research and teaching activities at IØT. All research groups and professional areas have a clear focus on sustainability in their activities, including those related to sustainable production and consumption, sustainable transition, circular economy, innovation and purchasing.

The position will be linked to the section for Health, Safety and Environment. This is a collaborative section with renowned researchers who are active in many national and international research projects, funded by, for example, the EU and the Research Council of Norway. The section works closely with both industry and the public sector. The teaching in the section is closely linked to the master's program in Sustainability, Occupational Health and Safety Management (former name: the master's program in Health, Safety and Environment) and to the master's program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management. In addition, the section has a significant responsibility of teaching sustainability management in electives for all master's engineering students. The section also provides guidance to students at master’s in Industrial Ecology and Master in Globalization and Sustainable Development.

The research area for this position is sustainability management from a business perspective. In this context, this is how industrial companies, businesses and public enterprises develop strategies, set goals and implement restructuring processes to achieve their goals within environmental impact, social and economic conditions. How does the company affect its surroundings, how can the company assess this and how do they ensure these targets both internally and with a value chain perspective?

The applicant's scientific profile should be compatible with the section’s other academic activities, but have natural links to teaching and research activities at one or more of the department's other sections.

The department (IØT) has as its mission to carry out education and research activities at a high international level. IØT’s core activity lies in the intersection between technology/natural sciences, business economics, management, and HSE, aiming to promote sustainable value creation in technology-based areas in industry, business and the public sector in Norway.

We recruit new employees in line with the mission and want engaged people who are passionate about helping the department achieve the vision of "More research and interaction that increases our value creation at the interface between technology / science and economics, management and HSE". We are looking for employees who have experience with and / or see potential for continuous innovation and new thinking in this interface and can strengthen the department's profile in sustainability with emphasis on the connection between economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable innovation and development.

The position as Associate Professor / Professor reports to the Head of department.


 Main duties and responsibilities
  • Be a driving force for the department's overall activity within sustainability, and contribute to realizing the department's potential within technology-based sustainable innovation and development
  • Teaching in subjects where sustainability management is the main theme as well as in subjects where sustainability management is one of several topics
  • Further development of the subject area sustainability management and the teaching program, including continuing education
  • Supervision of master's and doctoral students in their field
  • Research and publication at a high international level
  • Initiate and coordinate the work with development of research applications
  • Participate in, leading and managing externally funded research projects
  • Scientific area responsibility together with the other scientific staff
  • Exam preparation and evaluation without additional remuneration
  • Relevant administrative and / or management tasks

Qualification requirements

The following are the requirements for the position of Associate Professor:

a)      Scientific competence at doctoral level within sustainability management in a business perspective. The research profile must be focused on how companies can work for increased sustainability by reducing their own environmental impact, while ensuring a holistic sustainability perspective. In the application candidates must be able to document competence of sustainability management at company level, for example strategy development, environmental management systems, environmental assessment, indicator development and the like.

b)      Experience in publications of own research and evident track record of publication of research in recognized and relevant international scientific journals. Most emphasis will be put on scientific articles published in the last five years (excluding statutory leave) with relevance for the announcement. We look for an active researcher to fill this position, and we consider the scientific publication record in light of the length of the applicant’s academic career. Quality and breadth will be evaluated.

c)     Documented experience with teaching and supervision at university level within sustainability management.

d)      Documented experience of having played an active role in interdisciplinary work / research projects with a focus on sustainable transformation.

Candidates who have recently defended their dissertation or who have submitted a doctoral dissertation at the time of applying, but have not yet defended their dissertation, are also encouraged to apply.

It will be considered positive if the following qualifications are met and documented:

I.     Competence and experience in initiating and leading research projects

II.     Experience from collaboration with technology environment

III.    International collaborative experience, preferably experience with international research projects

IV.    Experience with practical application of sustainability management in industry, businesses or public enterprises

V.     Experience with interdisciplinary research that links environmental aspects to the working environment and safety management

VI.    Expertise in assessing environmental and possibly other sustainability aspects with a value chain and life cycle perspective.

VII.   Knowledge of Norwegian working life

VIII.  Technology profile on sustainability management

For an application for a professorship, it is required that you meet all the qualifications a – d  as well as the desired qualifications I-VIII, both described above. In addition, the assessment criteria described in Faculty guidelines  must be fulfilled.

Other requirements for both positions

It is expected that new employees who do not master a Scandinavian language can, within three years, demonstrate knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language in line with level three in the Norwegian course for foreigners at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. After this, the employee must be willing and able to conduct research and teaching in Norwegian.

Pedagogical qualifications will be evaluated. The evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, presentational skills in your scientific work and experience from PhD - or master level supervision, and teaching and pedagogical background of other sorts. Employees without basic educational competence and who cannot document corresponding qualifications are required to undergo an approved development program within two years of employment.

The person appointed must comply with decisions on changes due to developments in the subject area, and organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 630 000,- to NOK 731 400,- per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.

The gross salary for the position of Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 670.000,- to 800.000,- depending on competence.

From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants (Statsansatteloven ), and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that the person who is hired can be present at and available to the institution.

The total work obligation is divided into research, teaching and administration. Approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching, however the division between these fields of work obligation may vary over time.
