Professor or Associate Professor

At the Faculty of Medicine, the Department of Biomedicine, there is 1, potentially 2, permanent positions (100%) available as Professor or Associate Professor of Biomedicine.

We are seeking a colleague who, together with the staff at the department, will contribute to excellence in research and teaching. The department has five research units , which are divided into 22 research groups . 

Research at our department is centered around fundamental questions in human medicine and biomedicine. The main focus areas include cancer research, physiology, neuroscience, drug discovery, metabolism, disease mechanisms, proteomics, biomarkers, cardiovascular research, the relationship between structure and function of macromolecules, and the biology of the extracellular matrix. 

Our teaching covers the 1st and 2nd years of the medical and dentistry programs, the Master's in Biomedicine, PhD courses, as well as courses in dental care, pharmacy, and nutrition. 

The successful candidate will become part of one of the five existing research units and will share the technical support available in this unit. Typically, there are 2-3 technical positions per research unit. Additionally, the department has extensive laboratory space available for wet lab research. The position's time is equally divided between research and teaching-related tasks, with a smaller portion allocated to administrative tasks. 

We are looking for someone in an active phase of their career, with significant expertise in a research field relevant to the department. For one of the positions, outstanding research in the field of cancer will be considered an advantage. Similarly, teaching competence in human physiology will also be considered beneficial.



Work tasks/research field:

The person who fills this position shall both initiate and lead research projects, teach and supervise students and research fellows, and perform administrative tasks within a reasonable time frame. 

It is expected that the person who fills this position will regularly submit applications to relevant national and international sources for research financing. 

The person who fills this position is obligated to teach in areas relating to the study programmes for which the faculty/department is responsible at any given time. 

The person who fills this position is expected to demonstrate a high level of ambition and good quality with regards to research and teaching, and to participate actively in the strategic planning and academic activities of the department and the faculty.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Qualified applicants have a Norwegian doctoral degree in a relevant academic field, or equivalent qualifications, and satisfy the requirements concerning educational competence (please see below).
  • The ideal candidate publishes at a high international level, has been successful in applying for grants from national and international sources of financing for research and educational development, and has established, or is in the process of establishing, his or her own research team. Results attained in the course of the last 5-7 years will be be given particular weight in evaluation of the application. 
  • The ideal candidate also has experience with teaching at the bachelor- and master level or in a programme of professional study, as well as experience with supervision of research fellows. 
  • Experience from different national and international research institutions, and the ability to establish international networks will count positively in the evaluation, as will experience with and interest in innovation. 
  • The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.
  • Educational competence is a requirement for the position, see guidelines for establishment of a pedagogical portfolio at Center for medical education . The requirement is absolute for appointment as professor while an associate professor will be offered the necessary training if the requirement is not met before appointment. 
  • The language of teaching is normally Norwegian. The person who fills this position must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years after appointment. Language courses will be offered.

    Salary NOK 919 200 (code 1013, pay grade 82). Salary gross p.a. for a full-time position in the state salary scale. In the case of a highly qualified candidate, a higher salary may be considered. 
  • Associate professor:
    Salary NOK 720 100 – 732 300 (code 1011, pay grade 72-73), specialist salary NOK 732 300 - 759 100 (code 1011, pay grade 73-75). Salary gross p.a. for a full-time position in the state salary scale. In the case of a highly qualified candidate, a higher salary may be considered.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefits .
