Position Overview

Massey University is a world-leading university ranked in the top 16% of Universities in the World in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.  In 2021/2022 Massey University partnered with the Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE) to launch a Joint Education Institute called the ‘Massey Institute at NUFE’ (MIAN).  MIAN is Massey’s first joint education institution (JEI) in China and the first JEI from a New Zealand university in Jiangsu Province.

MIAN is a collaboration involving Massey Business School (MBS) in the areas of economics, finance and organisational technology management.  Each year MIAN admits 300 new students which undertake dual bachelor awards combining MBS’s Bachelor of Business and NUFE’s equivalent qualifications and they study over 4 years. So, at its peak, Massey University will have 1200 students based at MIAN in Nanjing.

Nanjing is the regional capital of China’s east-central Jiangsu province, and one of China’s ancient capitals.  It is approximately 300 km from Shanghai. It has a rich and complex history and a reputation for beautiful scenery and parks integrated into city living. Nanjing is the educational centre of southern China, with purposeful planned provision including the remarkable ‘Xianlin University City’.  There are twelve universities with campuses at Xianlin, including NUFE’s main campus, where MIAN is located.  Xianlin University City has excellent, modern amenities, including recently developed purpose-built schools, health care, retail, accommodation and transport links.

As MIAN grows and develops, we are seeking to expand the academic staff base for Massey’s contribution to the dual awards and accordingly MBS is excited to recruit the first academic roles with specific alignment to MIAN.  MBS invites applications from qualified candidates interested in contributing to the teaching of our Bachelor of Business at MIAN.

The two roles:

  • We need expertise in Economics (1 role) or Finance (1 role), although we are also open to applications from candidates spanning these areas, and can include organisational techology management.
  • Will primarily teach students at MIAN in Nanjing so candidates considering making an application should consider the requirement that large portions of the year will be spent teaching face to face in Nanjing.
  • Appointees will be full-time and join our permanent Massey faculty staff and have full status as Massey University employees.
  • The roles are designed to be filled by Massey ‘teaching scholars’ – this means we expect applicants to be great teachers and we will concentrate workload arrangements primarily around teaching and learning.
  • To be appointed it is a requirement that applicants have a minimum of two years relevant teaching experience in a tertiary setting, and including experience in co-developing and co-delivering materials.
  • It is essential that any Senior Tutor level appointments hold a minimum of a Masters Degree in a relevant field, but a doctoral qualification is preferred.
  • It is essential that anyLecturer level appointments hold a minimum of a doctoral qualification in a relevant field.  A track record of research and publishing in high quality journals is preferred.
  • Applicants will teach, mark and do administration in English and there is no requirement that applicants be proficient in Chinese language, but clearly cross-cultural experience will be beneficial.
  • To be appointed you will need to hold a valid passport and be eligible to hold a Chinese visa.  Having the right to work in New Zealand is also an expectation.

Benefits:

  • The Salary Range for these roles are from $81,172-97,991 (NZD) for appointment as Senior Tutor or $81,172-103,595 (NZD) for appointment as Lecturer.
  • Salary will be negotiable according to qualification, background, and experience.
  • Massey’s standard conditions of employment benefits and rights including leave and superannuation will apply.
  • Travel and accommodation costs in line with Massey’s preferred arrangements for MIAN teachers and all other reasonable costs associated with being on overseas duties will be met by Massey University

Please contact us at this address if you have any specific questions about the roles:[email protected]

Please note, all completed applications must be submitted online. Applications close 11.30pm, Sunday 28 January 2024 (NZ time).
