The role/Te mahi

In the role of Senior Solicitor, you will act as a trusted advisor giving legal advice to managers and staff in order to assess and mitigate legal risk and assist the University in achieving its strategic and tactical goals.

This exciting new role will ensure projects, activities and decision making have the required support to progress and deliver desired outcomes lawfully, while applying best practice.  You will also cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako 

To be successful in this role you will be a qualified Barrister or Solicitor with a current practicing certificate and a sound understanding and knowledge of either public or commercial law. You will have the opportunity to shape your role into areas of law that interest you.

You will also need to have:
•    Legal experience within a medium to large complex organisation.
•    An understanding of our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply its principles in a meaningful way in this role.
•    The ability to build relationships and influence.
•    Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga and te reo Māori or a willingness to learn.

Highly developed communication skills, excellent organisational skills and attention to detail are essential for this role. We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, thrive working in a team environment and have a positive approach to work and life.

Good knowledge of the University policies and procedures would be an advantage, but not essential. Working understanding of the Education Act 2020, Official Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 2020, Local Government Official Information & Meetings Act 1987, and Public Records Act 2005 is important for this role.

This is a permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week) position, located in Dunedin. 

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this position.

Relocation support will be provided.

The salary range for this position is $133,845 to $161,762 per annum.
