Offer Description

Office of the Provost
Palmerston North

The Riddet Institute is a world-best research centre in food and nutritional sciences, providing fundamental scientific understanding and training for a new generation of science leaders. The Riddet Institute includes a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) that integrates partner organisations (Massey University (host), Auckland and Otago Universities, AgResearch and Plant and Food Research) and disciplines. Collectively, this leads to a 'NZ Inc' approach to food research (and related disciplines) and generates knowledge and capability that transforms the New Zealand food sector.

We are seeking an ambitious researcher who has the passion and potential to apply rapidly emerging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies to solve complex food and nutritional challenges. We are particularly interested in the application of these technologies in food formulations, new product development, flavour science, and precision nutrition. The Riddet Institute undertakes world-class research in specific areas of food science, including food structure, digestive physiology and metabolism, alternative proteins, and cellular agriculture, and generates huge amounts of data and research outputs in these fields. We would like to strengthen our capability of predictive analytics using artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, to accelerate our research impact.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in artificial intelligence or computer science or a related field with strong interest in developing new methods for deep data processing, and applications of artificial intelligence to complex food related systems. They will also demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving techniques, as well as high motivation and enthusiasm to work with an interdisciplinary team in food and nutritional sciences. This may involve experts across the Riddet Institute's global network as well as developing new collaborations.

The salary range for this role is at a Senior Research Officer or Research Officer grade (2024), ranging from $81,172 - $143,948 (NZD). Salary will be negotiable by background/skills and experience. This is an appointment for an initial term of three years.

Your application should include: (1) a copy of your CV, (2) a statement of your research interests and goals, (3) the names of at least two referees, (4) your university transcripts and (5) a cover letter that describes why you are the best candidate for the appointment.
