We have an opportunity in our Researcher Services team for someone who shares our passion for supporting research focused on Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific, and wishes to contribute to the delivery of our services and activation of our collections.

Who are we/Ko wai mātou

The Hocken is one of the foremost research libraries in New Zealand and celebrates the histories, cultures and natural environments of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.

Our collections - archives, publications, music and AV, ephemera, maps, photographs and art - contain both historical and contemporary material. 

Staff at the Hocken cater to the research needs of academics and students from the University of Otago, as well as researchers from other New Zealand and international universities and institutions, and independent professional and amateur researchers, all of whom value the diverse nature and depth of our collections.

Global interest in our collections is ever-increasing, and in response, we are working to ensure greater access, and the delivery of broad client-focused services. 

The role/Te mahi

The Senior Collections Assistant provides support to the Manager, Access and Operations, in the provision of Hocken’s services to its visitors and research communities, both onsite and at a distance.

Key tasks of the role include:
•    Responsibility for managing reference desk, office and digital projects rosters.
•    Responsibility for maintaining technology and services related to the provision of researcher services including troubleshooting.
•    Assisting users of Researcher Services to identify, locate and access collection material and resources. 
•    Guiding users of Researcher Services in the use of equipment and assisting with requests for digital scans. 
•    Contributing to the promotion of Hocken by assisting with tours and talks, writing blog posts and contributing to exhibitions and events.
•    Overseeing use of collection material by researchers and monitoring compliance with reading room rules, collections restrictions and copyright.
•    Supporting digitisation programmes, as required.
•    Overseeing the administrative functions of the General Assistant team.
•    Assisting with collecting and reporting of statistics.
•    Overseeing management of the online and physical Hocken shop.
•    Working with the Manager Access and Operations to monitor health and safety concerns.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

•    A University degree in an area relating to the Hocken’s subject specialisation.
•    Excellent general knowledge of Aotearoa New Zealand and Pacific history and culture. 
•    Experience working in a library, archive, museum or related institution. 
•    Working knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.
•    Experience overseeing staff and allocating tasks.
•    Demonstrable ability to develop and oversee processes.
•    Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
•    A strong customer service ethic, with excellent communication skills. 
•    Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
•    An ability to work with accuracy at all times. 

Further details/Pūroko

This is a permanent, full time (37.5 hours) position, worked Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5.00pm. There is some rostered weekend and evening work also.
