Position Overview

We are seeking to appoint a Professorial Chair in Alternative Proteins to join the Riddet Institute Centre of Research Excellence at Massey University, New Zealand. 

Jointly funded by Massey University and AgResearch, New Zealand, this position will be located at the state-of-the-art new joint food science facility, located at the Palmerston North Campus.

As the successful applicant you build a new internationally-recognised research capability in the rapidly emerging field of alternative protein biotechnologies, with an emphasis on precision fermentation, synthetic biology or cellular agriculture. You will be tasked with developing new collaborations, build cross-functional teams, secure external funding, and provide industry leadership in their chosen field. The position includes significant base funding for postgraduate research for at least five years.

With a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant area, you will have an outstanding track-record of high-quality publications and other outputs. combined with at least five-years’ experience in a senior role leading multi-disciplinary teams and supervising graduate students. A proven record of establishing and leading successful and enduring research collaborations across institutes will be desirable.

The Riddet Institute is a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) that integrates partner organisations (Massey University (host), Auckland and Otago Universities, AgResearch and Plant & Food Research) and disciplines. Collectively, this leads to a “NZ Inc” approach to food research and generates knowledge and capability that transforms New Zealand and the New Zealand food industry.

AgResearch is one of New Zealand’s Crown Research Institutes. Its purpose is to enhance the value, productivity and profitability of New Zealand’s pastoral, agri-food and agritechnology sector value chains to contribute to economic growth and beneficial environmental and social outcomes for New Zealand. 

The position will offer an attractive remuneration package in line with the professorial (academic) scale of Massey University. The salary range for this role (in 2024) is $156,841+ (NZD) based on skills and experience.
