We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia at the University of Otago, Wellington. You will be involved in a Research Programme focusing on the immune response to surgery, mainly in vascular surgery patients.
 
The role/Te mahi
 
As a Research Assistant within our department, you will help maintain the surgical immunology biobank which includes gaining patient consent at Wellington Hospital (Te Whatu Ora – Capital, Coast and Hut Valley), collecting specimens from surgery and processing samples. You will be required to liaise with clinicians and researchers to complete these tasks. 

In addition, other duties will include:
•    Completing experiments.
•    Supporting research students.
•    Laboratory maintenance.
•    Administration (such as finance and ordering).

Once trained, you will be responsible for the day-to-day independent running of the biobank and assigned experiments with minimal supervision.
 
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
 
A period of appropriate training and supervision will be provided for this position, although candidates should have a background in molecular biology. 

Experience in flow cytometry is preferred. 
 
The position requires a high degree of responsibility, exceptional communication skills and self-organisation.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE), fixed term (16 month) position, located in Wellington.

The salary for a Research Assistant is $29.10 per hour.
