Job Description
TeWhiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
The School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland is currently looking for an early career academic to join our diverse and internationally renowned school as a Professional Teaching Fellow. If you are passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and want to build lasting collaborations, and value diversity, we encourage you to apply.
The appointee will be in charge of (1) developing, coordinating, and teaching Data Science courses in the Data Science programmes for Computer Science, and (2) coordinating and supervising Data Science projects. Duties will include lecturing large classes, delivering and coding Data Science courses offered through Auckland Online, and coordinating Data Science projects. Experience in engaging and teaching students in any area of computer science is essential. The various Data Science programmes we offer are run jointly with our Department of Statistics, which invented R. We expect the successful candidate to contribute to the continuously growing success of these programs.
Applicants should have expertise in the area of Data Science and have expertise in any of the following fields: data mining, data management, machine learning and AI, statistics, and programming.
Strong organisational and interpersonal skills are important. Experience with students, supervision of projects, and exposure to lecturing is essential. Preference will be for applicants from under-represented groups – such as female, Māori, and Pasifika
This is a full time (40 hours per week), permanent position based on the University of Auckland's City Campus. Note that this is a teaching-only position.
Remuneration: PTF1, $100,696 per annum

Our ideal candidate will have:
- A PhD degree (or close to submission) in Computer Science or relevant fields Some degree of experience in university lecturing at undergraduate/graduate level
- Demonstrated ability to use a range of teaching techniques and technologies to deliver an excellent student experience Ideally having some experience in delivering courses through online teaching platforms
- Demonstrated teaching that is informed by an understanding of research on teaching and learning in higher education
- Ability to motivate, enthuse and inspire students
- An understanding of equity concerns, and New Zealand’s diverse cultural population
- Commitment to quality teaching
