Who we are/Ko wai mātou

Since its establishment in 1905 the Department of Physiology has grown to become one of the largest Departments in the University, being home to approximately 100 staff. 

We make major contributions to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of students in science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical lab sciences, nutrition, and physical education. 

The Department is internationally known for its outstanding contribution to new knowledge in various physiological areas (e.g. neurophysiology, cell physiology and cardiovascular physiology) and has a strong track record for being successful with the acquisition of highly competitive overhead-funded research grants.

The role/Te mahi

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in our Department to investigate Regulation and function of ion channels involved in hypothalamic vasopressin release.  

In this role you will:
•    Assist in designing and conducting experiments relating to the overall objectives of the project.
•    Analyse data and present it at scientific meetings and write up results for publications.
•    Assist with supervision of postgraduate students.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD and strong background in investigating the function and regulation of ion channels. 

Expertise in mechanobiology, combined with experience in patch-clamp electrophysiology, and/or protein detection via FRET and TIRF would be an advantage. 

The ideal candidate will have an excellent track record of effective scientific communication through publications and presentations. 

Successful candidates will also have:
•    A PhD and research experience in molecular cell biology specialising in membrane and ion transport physiology, or related area.
•    Self-motivation with a high ability to work alone and in a group environment.
•    A commitment to maintaining clear and full written records for a wide range of laboratory activities.
•    A willingness to learn new skills and techniques and to apply them diligently. 
•    The ability to write up manuscript drafts for publication and create posters and talks for relevant meetings.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE), fixed term (3 years) position, located in Dunedin. 

The position is available from 1 May 2024.

The salary for a Postdoctoral Fellow is $86,210 per annum.
