Microbiology, immunology, and virology are exciting areas of research. As basic biological sciences, they are at the forefront of research into life processes. A Microbiology or Infection and Immunity Postdoctoral Fellow at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka (the University of Otago) offers a variety of interesting and current topics with many practical applications and opens up a wide choice of career options.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is staffed by many distinguished researchers, five of whom are Fellows of the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Te mahi/The role

The main purpose of this position is to contribute to the research objectives of externally funded research projects including:
•    The MBIE project “Enhancing seed inoculants with bacteriophages to enable more sustainable agriculture”.
•    The MBIE program “Adaptable phage solutions: an Aotearoa-NZ platform for precision biocontrol for primary industries”.
•    The Marsden project “Understanding bacteriophage-pathogen specificity to support phage therapy”.

Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Skills and experience

•    PhD in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or similar field.
•    Experience with bioinformatics analyses of high-throughput sequencing data.
•    Proficient with R, Python, Bash (Linux), or similar, and familiar with reproducible concepts such as Git.
•    Familiar with applications of deep-learning approaches to biological systems.
•    Experience in experimental molecular and/or structural biology.
•    Experience with bioinformatic data analyses, including comparative genomics.
•    A publication record consistent with that of an active researcher performing at a high level.
•    A thorough, organised, and systematic approach to laboratory practice and record keeping is essential.
•    Self-motivated.
•    Ability to work well in a team environment.
•    Experience with Postgraduate student supervision.
•    High ethical standards of work.
•    Excellent organisational skills.

This is a full-time (1 FTE), fixed-term position for two years available from September 2024, based in Dunedin.

The salary for this position is $86,210 per annum.
