SCHOOLS’ LIAISON 
EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT

As the Pacific Liaison Officer within the External Engagement Division you will work with a highly professional, successful team of Liaison Officers to increase the number of Pacific secondary students enrolling at the University of Otago.

You will be a leader, a facilitator and an encourager, always mindful of the best interests of the student while you work to transition more Pacific students to successful tertiary study. Ideally, you will have at least 5 year’s experience working with young people as an educator or in a similar role.

You will be responsible for making presentations at secondary schools, mainly across the North Island, delivering information about enrolling, living and learning at the University of Otago. You will work alongside prospective students to assist them with course planning, decision-making and other aspects of university transition. 

The role supports schools, community groups and school careers advisers, providing them with knowledge of the opportunities for Pacific youth at the University of Otago.  Collaboration with relevant university staff on initiatives to increase the number of Pacific students enrolling at the University of Otago is an important part of the role, as is providing feedback, strategic information and advice to the University on the effectiveness of these initiatives to increase Pacific student recruitment.

Your skills and experience

For this role you will need to:
•    have a suitable knowledge and understanding of pacific peoples and their cultures.
•    have a suitable knowledge and understanding of Te Reo Māori me ngā tikanga.
•    be a university graduate.
•    be able to advise, work with and relate to teenagers and young adults with at least 5 years work experience in a field working with young people.
•    have the ability to be accepted widely in pacific communities and the ability to work constructively and thoughtfully with pacific families and students.
•    enjoy making effective, professional presentations to groups of school students and others.
•    ideally have a sound working knowledge of the current New Zealand secondary school curriculum and assessment matters, especially pertaining to Year 11-13 students.
•    ideally have an excellent knowledge of the University of Otago and its courses, but if not, the ability to quickly learn.
•    have a high level of writing, editing and proof-reading skills.
•    enjoy significant evening work and considerable out-of-town travel (for which a vehicle is provided).
•    have a clean, full driving licence.

This is full time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position, located in Auckland.
