MĀTAI WHAKAPONO KARAITIANA | THE THEOLOGY PROGRAMME
TE KETE ARONUI | DIVISION OF HUMANITIES

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to join Mātai Whakapono Karaitiana | The Theology Programme at the University of Otago.
Theology has been taught at the University of Otago for over 75 years. The University of Otago is a research-intensive university with a long history of excellence in teaching and research. We offer courses in Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and History, and Pastoral Theology. Our students include those from other areas in the Humanities, Education, Sciences, Commerce, and Law. While the Programme exists within a public university context, it also has strong and long-standing links with a wide variety of churches throughout New Zealand.

We are committed to strengthening our curriculum and research in relation to mātauranga Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi, and in accordance with the University of Otago’s Māori Strategic Framework. This position offers an opportunity for a suitably qualified scholar to teach from a kaupapa Māori perspective and to conduct research that will be beneficial for Māori communities.

Te mahi/The role

In this role you will be expected to engage in ongoing research, teaching, and undertake postgraduate supervision. It is hoped that the appointee will teach existing papers on Māori Religion and Theology; Mātauranga Māori and the Bible; and Christian Ministry in Te Ao Māori and develop a new paper in some aspect of Christian Theology that draws upon the resources of mātauranga Māori.

In addition, you will undertake research and share the results of your research through appropriate avenues including academic and popular publications, conferences, and workshops or seminars with stakeholders in the wider community.

The successful candidate will be a full staff member of the Theology Programme, and will be expected to take appropriate administrative and service roles within the Theology Programme. The expectation of academic staff members is that they will devote approximately 40% of their time to teaching and preparation, 40% to research, and 20% to administration and service activities.

Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Your skills and experience

The successful candidate will be a scholar with research experience and a completed PhD in the area of Christian Theology. Candidates who are enrolled in a PhD may be considered.
