Our division/Te Kete Aronui Encompassing a diverse mix of disciplines and professional programmes, the Division of Humanities/Te Kete Aronui makes a vital contribution to research, teaching and learning at the University of Otago/Te Whare Wānanga o Otago. It is comprised of seven academic units: the Faculty of Law/Te Kaupeka Tātai Ture, the College of Education/Te Kura Ākau Taitoka, Te Tumu: School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies, the School of Geography/Te Ihowhenua, the School of Performing Arts/Te Kāhui Tau, the School of Social Sciences/Te Puna Pāpori and the School of Arts/Te Pae Takata. The Division offers over 40 undergraduate subjects and has just over 5,000 equivalent full-time students, including approximately 1,000 tauira Māori taking one or more papers in our Division, and close to 300 staff. The role/Te mahi We are looking for a Kaiāwhina Māori to join our team. You will support the Division of Humanities/Te Kete Aronui in achieving the goals of the University’s Māori Strategic Framework with a particular focus on supporting the retention and achievement of tauira Māori, through providing advice and facilitating access to services, resources, and assistance from the University. Your skills and experience/ Kā pūkeka me kā wheako As a Kaiāwhina Māori you should have confidence in te reo me ngā tikanga Māori and an understanding of the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a tertiary context. It is also essential to have: An understanding of and experience in tauira Māori networks at the University of Otago/ Te Whare Wānanga o Otago, would be an advantage. • Acting as a point of contact and facilitating access to academic and pastoral care for tauira Māori in the Division.
• Endeavouring to meet with all first year Māori students enrolled in the Division and encouraging their engagement with the Te Huka Mātauraka/the Māori Centre and things Māori at the University.
• Liaising with academic programmes and support services with respect to issues relating to tauira Māori.
• Advising the Manupiki Māori/Associate Dean Māori and Pro-Vice-Chancellor on issues of concern or opportunity relating to tauira Māori.
• Working with the Manupiki Māori/Associate Dean Māori to support the implementation of Māori Strategic Framework in the Division.
• Establishing and maintaining a network of appropriate student support contacts across the University and being up-to-date and familiar with services available.
• A high level of experience in cultural settings such as on marae.
• A track record of positive relationships with Māori communities and Māori organisations.
• Project planning and implementation skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
