Nāia te pōwhiri nā Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha kia tono mai i te tūranga nei.

Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

In this diverse role, no day will be the same. If you're looking for something different from a standard 9-5 Monday-Friday job, this opportunity is for you!

You will assist with design, manufacture, maintain, and repair equipment used to support the School's activities, including a wide range of field work and laboratory tasks. Due to the unique nature of research and teaching activities, you will often need to problem-solve to adapt equipment.

You will work collaboratively with a diverse range of staff, ensuring that research activities and students are well supported. You will provide supervision, training, and share knowledge with staff and students.

It's important that you enjoy the outdoors, are comfortable on boats, and are flexible to work outside of standard hours, as you will support various field trips and research projects. Current examples include:

  • Working in Antarctica mainly on weather station installation and maintenance.
  • Assisting with fire burn research.
  • Operating in both inland waterways and marine environments.
  • Working in Alpine environments particularly glacial research.

Mōu | Who You Are
You have significant trade experience, have experience in (or exposure to) a range of different trades and be skilled in a broad range of workshop methods.

As you will be acting as deck crew on the school's research vessel, experience on boats is desirable.

You will be working with a diverse range of people, therefore it is important that you have strong communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to maintain relationships under (occasionally challenging) field conditions.

Additionally, you will:

  • Be skilled in design, maintenance, and construction of custom solutions.
  • Have the ability to diagnose faults (electrical and mechanical) and can creatively resolve these.
  • Hold a Full New Zealand Driver's License. You should be comfortable driving a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and backing a trailer.
  • Hold a New Zealand trade certificate or have equivalent experience.
  • Hold a first aid certificate or be willing to obtain one.
