Otago is famous for its residential college communities supporting thousands of mostly first-year students as they begin their tertiary journey at the University of Otago. Established in 1943, Te Whare o Arana (Arana College) is a 342-bed college where the Tautiaki-Kaiāwhina plays a central role in sharing the Arana manaakitanga to everyone. Our main aim is to foster a strong sense of whanaungatanga as an essential foundation for learning and personal growth of Arana tauira.

The role / Te mahi

Tautiaki-Kaiāwhina (Assistant Wardens) are key members of the College pastoral and welfare team. With a focus on wellbeing / oraka, they provide culturally appropriate opportunities for residents to experience cultural, sporting, academic and personal development in a positive college environment.

We are looking for a future leader who is resilient and capable of handling (sometimes) difficult and complex situations.

Our ideal candidate will have:
•    Experience working with young adults in a leadership capacity.
•    Demonstrated ability to work effectively in emergency or crisis situations.
•    Experience in engaging students and managing a variety of safe and fun student focussed events and activities.
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills 
•    Ability to achieve a range of tasks under competing demands, within agreed timeframes.
•    Experience in the tertiary sector would be a distinct advantage.

This exciting role will suit people from varied backgrounds who are passionate about working with young adults. Candidates with knowledge and appreciation of cultural issues and knowledge of Tikanga Māori and / or knowledge in providing positive opportunities for Tauira Māori, will be especially welcome

This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) position, located in Dunedin.

The position is live-in and requires a high level of commitment, including being rostered on-call. Accommodation (1-bedroom, 1-bathroom self-contained flat with whiteware) is provided within the College and the total remuneration package for this position includes full compensation for all accommodation costs.

The salary range for this role is $65,281 to $69,648, top of range is $74,947 per annum.
