About us/Mō mātou

The Department of Pathology is one of eight departments within the Dunedin School of Medicine, Dunedin. The Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical and health science student teaching and supervision of postgraduate research students.

The Department houses several internationally recognised research groups and has six major research areas including Cancer Biology, Clinical Pathology, Development, Genetics and Epigenetics, Haematology and Immunotherapy.

The role/Te mahi

As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will undertake laboratory work on the Health Research Council Project investigating how cancer cells evolve by exploiting process such as alternative splicing and non-sense mediated decay, leading to metastasis and treatment resistance

In this role you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the research project. This will include data acquisition, contribution to data analyses and management of laboratory facilities.

Key tasks of the role include:
•    Cell culture experience will be beneficial.
•    Cloning and gene editing.
•    Assisting with CRISPR-Cas9 screens.
•    DNA and RNA extraction.
•    cDNA synthesis followed by RT-qPCR and ddPCR.
•    Western Blot and protein analysis.
•    Assist in training of postgraduate students and junior research staff in the laboratory.
•    Assist with management of laboratory facilities to ensure efficient and productive research.
•    Data curation, analyses, and reporting.
•    Participate in the drafting of manuscripts for submission to journals.
•    Report and participate in regular meetings of the research team as required.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

•    Relevant experience and a suitable tertiary qualification are essential – minimum BBioMedSci Honours, or PGDipMLSc, MMLSc or MSc degree in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology biochemistry, genetics or a related discipline.
•    Experience in molecular biology techniques including but not limited to DNA and RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and RT-qPCR.
•    Experience in cell culture is essential.
•    Cloning experience is beneficial.
•    Experience with gene editing (transfections) and CRISPR-Cas9 is beneficial.
•    Experience with western Blotting and protein assays is beneficial
•    Computer literacy particularly in data management is essential
•    Ability to maintain accurate records and analyse data is essential
•    An ability to work independently and to progress the project to completion
•    Excellent time management and organisational skills

As this is role involves collaborative work, you are expected to have well-developed interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to write clearly and contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts.

This is a part-time (0.7 FTE), fixed-term position for 12 months.
