Job description
An earth scientist who studies longer term carbon fluxes in the Earth's system, such as carbon sequestration by sediments or subduction related fluxes to ultimately understand carbon-climate processes on longer time scales.

Your duties
  • conduct research on Earth's interior carbon cycle and its link to surface conditions over longer timescales, using natural sample analyses, experiments, and/or numerical simulations
  • teaching key aspects of the carbon cycle in existing and new geology and geochemistry courses on BSc. and MSc. level
  • supervision of Masters and Bachelors theses
  • acquisition of external funds
  • (co-) publish scientific papers

Requirements
  • PhD in earth or planetary science with a demonstrable expertise in studying the long-term interior cycle of carbon and/or other volatile compounds
  • Experience in academic teaching (or willingness to acquire it)
  • Strong willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Our BSc programs are currently taught in Dutch. Therefore, Dutch proficiency, or willingness to learn Dutch, is a requirement

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.
The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years - 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring.
The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months.
Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:
