Job description
The Institute for History seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of a university lecturer with teaching and research expertise in Digital Humanities and AI in the field of early modern and modern history. The lecturer will join the Dutch History section, but will teach in various components of the history BA and MA programmes

Key responsibilities:

• Teach and supervise students in the BA and MA programmes in History dealing with early modern as well as modern history;
• Strengthen the place of Digital History and AI in the History BA and MA curricula;
• Develop research expertise on Digital History and AI;
• Carry out research, resulting in publications relevant for one of the Leiden research specializations: ‘Medieval and Early Modern History: Europe in its Global Context’; ‘Colonial and Global History’, ‘Politics, Culture and National Identities, 1789 to the Present’;
• Use research experience to co-supervise doctoral research;
• Communicate research results beyond academia;
• Develop research projects; write national and international grant proposals;
• Undertake administrative tasks, and play a role in the various teaching and examination committees;
• Be present in Leiden throughout the academic year.

• You are a historian with a PhD, a good range of publications commensurate with your career stage and a strong record in Digital History and AI;
• You are an experienced and inspiring academic teacher, with clear ideas on teaching methods, willing and able to teach across the early modern and modern period;
• You have demonstrated advanced knowledge and designing/programming capabilities in Digital History and/or AI, and have successfully used this in teaching and research;
• You have experience in obtaining research funding commensurate with career stage;
• You are a scholar with a strong academic network and collaborations, notably in the field of Digital History and AI;
• You have affinity with and capacity for teamwork and collegiality in an intercultural work environment;
• You are willing to actively contribute to the setting of the Leiden Institute for History;
• You have an excellent command of English as well as Dutch, and the ability to teach in these languages.

Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs, or BKO). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Terms and conditions
The appointment (0,8 fte) is in temporary employment for 18 months (1 August 2024 to 31 January 2026), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The position corresponds to the position of University Lecturer in the University system of job profiles (UFO). The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3557 (scale 10-4) to € 6181 (scale 12) for a full working week. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12.
